“It is so vast that one cannot hold the image of it in one's soul”. This is how Goethe described the “Amphitheatrum Flavium”, the most visited monument in Italy, a building with an infinite history that leaves everyone that has the fortune to visit it open-mouthed.
The Colosseum. History
It is 72 A.D. and Rome is ruled by Vespasian, the first emperor of the Flavian dynasty. Work begins on what will become the greatest Roman amphitheatre in history.
It was financed using the proceeds of provincial taxes and loot from the sacking of the temple of Jerusalem (70 A.D.) and took just 8 years to build.
In 80 A.D. the Amphitheatrum Flavium was opened by Titus with 100 days of games during which around 2,000 gladiators and 9,000 animals were killed.
The approx. 70,000 Romans that the arena was able to hold were able to watch venationes (fake hunts and fights between ferocious animals) in the mornings and munera (fights between gladiators) in the afternoons.
The final show at the Colosseum was in 523 A.D. after which the monument was abandoned and used as a quarry. In 1749 Pope Benedict XIV consecrated the monument to Christ and the martyrs.
