I sometimes frequent motherless to watch amateur porn, honestly sometimes I watch the teen amateur teen porn on the site. I always make sure to report anything that I find suspicious.
I do this every now and then but I'm worried that I'm putting myself at risk of having a run in with the law for unintentionally viewing illegal content, which makes me incredibly paranoid

Things are better now. In the nineties you could encounter pornados. Numerous web pages opening up on your computer by themselves until your PC crashed. You'd be like I don't know what really dirty and illegal stuff might be on it now.
Law enforcement is after people involved in active distribution of exploitive material. If that isn't you probably don't have much to worry about. But do clear your cache and history once in a while and don't torrent porn as you don't really know what you are torrenting while it is in process.
Every so often I have nightmares I have a pornado on a work computer and spen frantic minutes trying to delete it all.
Connecting your lid-closed work PC to a projector and then opening your laptop, where you forgot you were on a porn site last night, and now it's on the big screen but your PC is being sluggish and unresponsive because it's waking up from suspend and even slamming the lid shut again doesn't put it back to sleep in a timely enough manner.

You assume too much. I have caugh't multiple employees with stuff on their computers that was open and visible to an entire call room floor. Not everyone has the sense of preservation to close things out. Happened more often than I would have thought in a room of IT people.
When covid happened, there was a in person team meeting about the next steps. A director opened their laptop to give numbers of the infected in the state. We immediately heard a super loud porn ad. Something about “hot Asians.” It was hilarious!

If you’re trying to cover your tracks in fear of doing something potentially illegal then clearing your cache and history doesn’t do shit, by the way. It’s a good idea to do every once in a while because it can take up a lot of space and effect browser performance. But it has absolutely no impact on any authoritative body being able to view your activity on the internet.
Long story short, don’t knowingly try to search for underage porn. Don’t try to distribute it. It’s disgusting and wrong. All the content on Motherless is moderated and anyone uploading has “agreed” that those depicted in the content are of legal age. Individual users that view content on the site are not responsible for what other users upload.
Trying to catch just the active distributors is also completely incorrect. Law enforcement will bust anything they can. Just look at r/sexoffendersupport

Accidentally viewing something illegal online is not a crime itself. As long as you are not downloading or seeking it out then you will be fine from a legal point of view.

From a purely technical perspective, there really isn't much of a distinction between "viewing" and "downloading". If you download a file per se, you can name it and choose where it goes, but your browser is constantly caching files too. The difference is nominal: procedurally generated file names in a directory that gets cleared from time to time. It all goes onto your hard drive either way.
Apart from the fact that looking at an image means you have created a copy of it on your machine. If your machine is searched and it is found you have “created a pornographic image of a child”

I know for pornhub you have to submit your ID before you can post videos and also the ID of anyone else in your videos. Not sure how strictly they enforce it though.

If there were real rapes in the searches, and you could get in trouble for watching it, but you can't parse out the difference, I don't see how you could be convinced of anything. If you understand how that would work in curious to know.
It really comes down to if they have any evidence. Search terms alone are not really enough to prosecute someone. However, they could be used when paired with other evidence. If someone is under investigation for a crime related to this and their search is obtained with those type of terms it could be used to showed a trend in behavior. Depending on where you live, using the defense of the websites should have been moderating better would not be a valid excuse.

In the US its downloading and redistribution, viewing it once or until you stop or report it isn't illegal if that were the case no one would ever report it.
Free porn is less of an issue it's worse if you pay for a sub, then view it through the subbed platform. Free porn is over run with amateur non models only real issue with free is international ages of adulthood. Also depends if your activity involves a VPN to mask you home location.
