As the trainer for the local SAR K9 team, I consistently find this book to be a valuable resource for our training. Not only does it contain information on training methods, but it covers the entire SAR training from base operations to lost person behavior and how canines play a role in it all. I have read many books and talked to many other trainers, but I still find this book to be the most thorough on what actually goes on during a mission when dogs are involved. The downsides are that it focuses exclusively on air scent and includes nothing on tracking/trailing, and the training section is actually only two to three chapters (if you count the obedience/obstacles) chapter, but even in those few pages there is a wide range of information put forth in easy to follow steps for training the dogs. I also appreciate that the book is fairly frank with the reader about the amount of time, sweat, and tears that can go into SAR K9 training (and just SAR in general). Some methods are a little outdated, but as with all dog training there are many, MANY ways to train and it is really dependent on the trainer, the handler, the dog, and the team on what methods are used and what works and doesn't work. I've found the methods in this book work with 90% of my team and are a great jumping point for getting into more difficult training as time goes on. Highly recommended!

I got this book to prepare for being part of a K-9 unit and training my first dog. It is extremely well-written with the appropriate balance between background, exercises, visual examples, and theory. You will get a nice broad overview of how different kinds of search dogs work. The bulk of the book details how to train an airscent or area search dog from the ground up. Specializations like cadaver do not get as much attention. There is also some nice material on K-9 first aid and team preparedness, but it is all stuff your SAR unit should be explaining to you as a trainee.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the book is very focused on ARDA teams. The wording makes it sound like all units use exactly the same equipment and have the same minimum number of dogs in each discipline, but this is not necessarily true of smaller units with less funding. So don't read this book and assume it is the Bible for K-9 SAR. It is more like a really good textbook.

The primary utility of this book is that it provides a good conceptual introduction to the world of K9SAR. It provides a panorama of what is involved in K9SAR (standards, training, equipment) and the various specialties. A thorough read of this book will give the beginner a handle on the issues and shop-talk you will encounter in the world of K9SAR.

Having said that...do not expect to learn how to train your dog for Search and Rescue from this book. Or any book. There is no way to learn to properly train a dog without the oversight of skilled mentors in the field. And hours and hours and hours of time with your dog.

Also, just like in parenting, for every training method or technique, there is someone with an opposite opinion. So much depends on the dog (its breed, temperament and preferences) and the handler. Do your homework, find mentors you trust, and let them guide you from selecting a pup onward.

Other books I've found useful in my own K9SAR training experience include: Following Ghosts: Developing the Tracking Relationship , Scent and the Scenting Dog (though the theory of rafts as presented here is dated), Ready! 2nd Edition The Training of the Search and Rescue Dog (Kennel Club Pro) , and Natural Dog Training .

A great book on how much work and effort go into training Search & Rescue handlers and their dogs. I love how much information this book gives you,while keeping it interesting and a real page turner for those who are interested in this type of work. Though if you're looking to train your own dog in this field...go somewhere else. While the book does give you some exercises you can do to get your dog ready, it will not go into further depth than that. The training is hard and an experienced handler will give you much better instruction.
But overall two Thumbs up!!! :)
