My husband and I returned to The Swag for our second visit during a wine event hosted by Provision Market in Fairhope, Alabama. Upon arrival we were delighted by our large, updated room with a fireplace, massive copper tub, and outdoor shower. (I have to say that showering while gazing out at the mountains felt like the ultimate luxury!) We brought our infant with us and there was more than enough space for our pack and play, and the small fridge and wet bar provided a great place for fixing her bottles. The updates to the property are so well done. I could have spent my entire visit on the new porch off the dining room enjoying the fire and watching hummingbirds. The dinners were outstanding; I think the Chef really outdid herself during this particular wine event as she focused on pairing the food with the wines in a set menu. I highly recommend the hike to the Science Learning Center. It is an easy to moderate 5ish mile hike with great views, a historical cabin, and a perfect place to stop and enjoy the provided picnic lunch at the Learning Center. I would also recommend visiting the new spa, as the deep tissue massage was one of the best I have ever had. We are still trying to recreate the Walk in the Woods cocktail at home, so grab one of those from the bar for us! One thing we love about The Swag is that while it is a luxury property with excellent service, it does not seem to take itself too seriously. Many of our servers were jovial and fun. The general manager and housekeeping alike were warm and conversational. We have been lucky enough to have both of our stays while the owners were on property and they were a delight. My only regret from this trip is that we did not have one more night (well, and that my massage was only 60 minutes)! We look forward to going back.

The Swag is blessed in its location in that it has the most wonderful views of the Smoky Mountains. For those hikers this has lots of hiking trails with great views. It abuts the Great Smoky Mountain National Park which can be hiked in as well. The rooms are quaint and rustic with many nice touches. WiFi is available everywhere for free but there are no TVs. We stayed in the Woodshed and enjoyed the views of the park off the back deck. There was an outdoor and indoor shower, a beautiful soaking tub, steam shower and dry sauna in our room. Also our room had a Nespresso machine and refrigerator stocked with soft drinks. Walking sticks are provided for hikes and can be kept as a souvenir. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included. The lunch is a packed lunch that can be taken on the hikes. Dinners are ordered ahead of time and are served at the table. This is the one area that we weren’t impressed with. The food quality and presentation could be improved. All in all a wonderful experience.

My wife and I have traveled extensively on 6 continents over the last 35 years, and the Swag is simply one of the most special places we have ever visited. It’s unique location, on a 5000 foot ridgeline with an unforgettable view, just steps from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a botanical paradise with more species of plants than all of Europe combined, is the first attribute that makes it that special. The combination of relocated historical mountain structures forming the exterior of the buildings, with thoroughly modern, comfortable, and even luxurious interiors, is the second special attribute. Excellent meals, special programs, beautiful gardens, special hideaways and amenities on the Swag property, and easy access to trails and activities in the National Park and the surrounding area add to the appeal. But, topping it all off is the loving care of the owners, Annie and David Colquitt, and the excellence of the Swag staff. The minute you start up the winding mile long drive to the top of the mountain, you will be transported to a state of relaxation that you will rarely feel. This is a place we will return to again and again.

I booked 2 nights here for my husband's birthday. It was arranged that we would arrive early for Sunday brunch, and the nights of our stay would feature Appalachian music and a bird walk. A couple of weeks before the trip, I noticed that there was no more music or bird walk "experts in residence" listed. I was disappointed that there was an obvious cancellation by these people but was more disappointed that substitute music had not been arranged. Maybe I should have taken this as a hint of how they do business and cut my losses at that point. The real problem, however, was the day before we were to arrive, I received a phone call telling us that we were not welcome for Sunday brunch as the group currently there wanted it to be a private affair. I was instead offered a sack lunch and the ability to walk the property, which certainly did not "make it right". The Swag had been informed several times this was a trip for my husband's birthday but that didn't seem to impress them. No offer to be their guest another time for brunch...nothing - just a sack lunch. These people need to learn some better customer relations when they are charging about $1K a night ... for what?????

Hello Pamela B, We are so sorry for the change in schedule for our Experts in Residence. Occasionally, our Expert's plans will change unexpectedly and we will pivot our offerings as necessary. I am also very sorry that we miscommunicated the availability of our Sunday Brunch on your arrival day. When I personally spoke with you on the phone I did offer to have our Chef create a special lunch for you and your husband so we could help make things right and get his birthday celebration back on track. We are so sorry you decided to cancel your stay with us and would love to have you come back and stay with us in the future. If you are interested in coming back, please reach out to me directly so that I can help set everything up for you to ensure you have a fantastic stay! Kindest regards, Will Jones

The Swag is an absolutely beautiful resort. The number of guests are kept to a small amount which enables a guest to not feel overwhelmed. The property is exceptional, the food delicious and the staff our outstanding. There were daily organized hikes, group events (wine tastings and cocktail parties) and the dinner was assigned seating which was great as they moved you around the 3 different dining rooms. This is an A+ property. It can be hard to get a reservation. But if you can book a stay, got for it!!! You won’t regret it!

My husband and I stayed at The Swag in late September. It was a celebration of life honoring my Mother and also a celebration of God's grace in curing me of cancer. I can't imagine a more appropriate place to have celebrated those two events. Like most before me have mentioned, the views were spectacular. The employees were spectacular as well, and this has always been such a deciding factor for our travels. If the employees are not friendly, we never revisit, but we rebooked The Swag for another trip within one week of our return home. There are no negatives to mention, but there are many positives. Upon arrival, Mark met us and gave us a quick tour and helped with our luggage. He was always super nice, and the General Manger, Will, was awesome too. Every day he made a point to speak to everyone and make sure all was good. Housekeeping was immaculate. Our room was cleaned while we were at breakfast, and it was cleaned again while at dinner. Once, one of our small trash cans was accidentally not emptied. I placed it in the hallway, and within two minutes it was fresh again with an apology note attached! There was no need to apologize, but that was above and beyond excellent service! All meals were cooked exactly as ordered, and the chef and staff were very gracious in making accommodations. The Wednesday picnic was so delicious! The grounds were lovely and the trails well marked. We appreciated the detailed maps that were available as well as all the suggestions. We were completely blessed to have Doug and Kathy Peters for the entertainment. Doug was so talented and entertaining with his stories and songs, and Kathy was both lovely and funny. I caught her doing yoga moves one night after dinner. Everything was our favorite, but if I had to pick a few then I would say the indoor and outdoor fires, the large outdoor patio, and the beautiful trails and serenity. We can't wait to be back at The Swag next year. We stayed in Laurin's Room and found it very charming and cozy. Our large bed was super soft, and we loved the steam shower. Thanks to everyone mentioned, and also a special thanks to our sweet wait staff...Emile, Tyler and Alyssa. Also, thanks to Becky and the front desk.

If you're looking for pools, tennis, loud music and crowds the Swag may not be for you. If you want to sit on your balcony in a warm bath robe, a stone's throw from the National Park watching the wild turkeys cross the field while the sun rises above the mountains, you wont be disappointed if you go to the Swag. Everything is 1st class. The buildings may look rustic but they are packed with modern amenities. Meals are included in the price and although the selections are limited, there are options for every taste. We dined on Maine Scallops, Wahoo and Filet Mignon. Everything was perfectly prepared. We enjoyed the opportunity to meet the staff as well as the guests. Can't wait to return

Silence the noise!

Loved. Loved. Loved. Every moment of my stay! I didn't have many expectations and was instantly blown away. Annie's room was nice and cozy! The outdoor shower was perfect after an adventurous hike up Hemphill Bald!

You can tell they pay a lot of attention to the details, the welcome photo, lip balm, and the walking sticks are perfect souvenirs (I like the simple things in life).

The food was great and drinks are delicious - be sure to try the Walk in the Woods cocktail. I was concerned with "what will I do" but there were plenty of activities throughout the day, even if it was simply being still and admiring the views.

As a solo traveler, I felt comfortable connecting with other guests and staff. There's a communal feel at The Swag that made it difficult to leave.

When you come, be intentional about disconnecting. There is very strong WiFi on the property but challenge yourself to silence the noise. It'll bring great clarity.

Grateful for my stay and be sure to say hi to Peter and Tyler! They are dynamic!

This was our fourth visit to the Swag. We were very happy to see that David and Annie and their new manager Will have preserved and enhanced this special place. The extensive trails are in even better shape. We enjoyed walking the nature trail with signs identifying and describing the trees and plants along the way. Sitting beside the babbling stream in Dan's hideway during this hike for our lunch from our Swag backpacks was a special time.
The new outdoor dining area was perfect for avoiding COVID issues. We enjoyed wonderful food by the fire while watching the full moon rise over the Smoky Mountains. The chef was once the executive chef at the Grove Park and is in his fourth year at the Swag. It was fun to be able to talk to him about food preparation and actually stand beside him as he prepared the Thursday barbecue and the bountiful Wednesday picnic feast at Goosberry Knob.
Nancy East was a charming expert about hiking and exploring the mountains. Eric and Ruth Watson provided beautiful Appalachian music (Ruth has a degree in classical flute and can play the authentic mountain instruments). Eric treated us to an incredibly interesting birding walk complete with binoculars and recorded bird sounds for each bird we saw.
Will, the new general manager, outdid himself in making us feel like family. We had a wonderful cool escape while it was hot and humid at home.
we have traveled all over the world. There is no more beautiful place anywhere.

The Swag was recommended to us by some fellow hikers who told us that The Swag rivaled Blackberry Mountain (a place we stayed last year, which is well known for its great facilities, food and service). And our friends were right! Every part of the experience at The Swag showed thoughtful service and attention to detail. From the time we arrived and until we said our goodbyes, the staff, led by Will and Mark, couldn't do enough to make our stay a memorable one. As an example, we missed a picnic lunch because we underestimated how long it would take us to do a morning hike. When we returned, we asked Mark if someone could throw a quick bite together for us. He not only made sure that happened, but he built a fire for us in the dining room while we waited for our food.

We stayed in the Woodshed cabin and were very pleased by those accommodations. We would recommend one of the cabins. They seem to have more space. The trade off, apparently, is that the lodge rooms have a view of the mountains whereas our cabin did not (although we had a very nice porch overlooking the woods).

The resort is really ideal for hikers. You step off the Swag property into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Swag provides maps and trail descriptions which include directions and information on elevations. There are also trails on the Swag property, which include some "hideaways" (areas with chairs and hammocks in the middle of the woods).

The food was good and the service was even better. Bar and wait staff were all very friendly and engaging. The housekeeping staff must have had ninja training. We never saw them. They did a great job keeping our fireplace and other supplies well stocked.

Overall, we had a great stay and, like many people who we met there, we look forward to returning.
