Five officers involved in fatal Richfield shooting identified - Bring Me The News Skip to main content

The officers involved in the fatal shooting of Brian Quinones earlier this month have been identified.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, which has taken over the investigation into the shooting on Sept. 7 in Richfield, released the names of five officers who responded to the incident, which left the 30-year-old dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

They are:

  • Officer Nicholas Pedersen, a 4-year veteran of the Edina Police Department
  • Officer Benjamin Wenande, a 4-year veteran of the Edina Police Department
  • Officer Joseph Carroll, a 4-year veteran of the Richfield Police Department
  • Officer Dylan Schultz, a 3-year veteran of the Richfield Police Department
  • Officer Macabe Stariha, a 2-year veteran of the Richfield Police Department

All five officers have been placed on standard paid administrative leave.

The sheriff's office said that the names had been withheld until now, to make sure interviews with all officers had been completed.

The investigation continues, with any findings to be turned over to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for review once it's completed.

Quinones was the subject of a police chase between Edina and Richfield, which he live-streamed in his car and shared on Facebook.

Twelve minutes into the video, Quinones got out with what appears to be a knife in his left hand. Moments later shots are heard, with police firing about 12 times.

Edina and Richfield Police Department said Quinones "confronted officers with a knife" at 77th Street East and Chicago Avenue in Richfield.

His death sparked protests at the scene and a march the night after, which briefly led to the shutting down of I-494 in Richfield.

Quinones' brother said the 30-year-old father-of-one had been suicidal prior to his death, with one of the last messages he posted on Facebook reading: "So sorry."
