$3M Lottery Haul To Sterling Woman

A Sterling woman won $3M with her Virginia Lottery "Mega Millions" ticket. She waited quite a while before revealing her special secret.

STERLING, VA—For reasons pretty much all her own, Ina H. Fernandez of Sterling decided not to tell anyone—even her husband of 52 years—she was in possession of a Virginia lottery Mega Millions ticket worth a cool $3 million. It was her little secret, and she kept it to herself for a couple of months.

"I just wanted to think about it," she told lottery officials. Thing is, she didn't even know herself until checking the numbers on her ticket about a month after the Sept. 5 drawing. "I was incredulous," he said.

Ultimately, a few days before the March 5 deadline, she decided it was time to officially cash in, as it were. Fernandez bought the ticket in the Giant Food at 21000 South Bank Street in Sterling. She actually won the second prize, worth $1 million, but spent an extra buck for the "Megaplier," which tripled her booty.
