My wife and I had the great pleasure of visiting the Hanover House from August 21st until August 25th. Our host Steve and his gracious staff went out of their way to make this trip to the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard a very enjoyable and memorable one! the rooms at the Inn were very tastefully decorated, nicely furnished and impeccably clean.

Steve and staff provided a wonderful breakfast with exquisite waffles (loved the blueberry topping!), a variety fresh fruits, cereals and fritatas all served on the covered porch. Steve's friendly, enaging manner set the tone for guests to interact and get to know each other and we met 5 different couples durimg our leisurely breakfasts (including 2 alums from the college where I work and a guy who went to my grammar school!).

The Inn provides many special touches such as beach towels and chairs for client use. Most appreciated was the free use of the finely conditioned Trek 800 bikes which easily saved us over $200 and was much easier than lugging our own bikes to the island. The Inn is located a short walk from town and is close to bike paths which lead to Oak's Bluff, Edgartown and other sections of the island.

The staff patiently answered all our questions about the island and genuinely seemed to enjoy interacting with the guests. This was the nicest inn we have ver stayed at and the cost was reasonable for the 4 star treament and high quality accomodations.

We stayed at the Hanover House for 4 nights. Steve was very, very nice and his knowledge of MV was most helpful as we planned our daily itineraries. The Inn is an older building with antiques and a more Victorian feel to it, but our room was very comfortable and had all the modern amenities that we needed. Plus a fireplace! The bed was a little soft for our liking, but we slept ok. We also had a skylight and if you like to sleep in - the light may hinder that a little bit. But there are rooms that don't have that eye-opener. The room was very clean and well maintained as was the rest of the property. The Inn is slightly secluded by trees and tall bushes along the front of the property, so it has a bit of a private feeling to it. It is located just a short distance from the VH ferry dock and, without luggage, is a very walkable place from town.

The front porch of the Inn is a year round room that is used for breakfast. A fridge, microwave, toaster, Keurig coffeemaker (and an assortment of coffees, teas & hot chocolate), glasses, dishes and silverware are all available 24/7 for your convenience. We were able to store leftovers from one of our dinners and warm it up the next day for lunch which was really nice. The breakfast that was served each day was wonderful. Always had a fruit selection, potatoes, a breakfast meat, and at least 3 hot choices along with juice, cereals to choose from, hot oatmeal and yogurts and bagels or toast (with all the condiments to go with them)and a pastry or two. In the afternoons, there was a cookie tray out with freshly baked cookies if you desired to have a little snack and also iced tea and lemonade. In the rest of the house, there was a sunken common room that had some seating to watch TV, a large table for gaming or whatever; just a big comfortable socializing area. Bikes were available if you wanted to ride around the area; also umbrellas and beach towels. Out front of the Inn were a couple of tables and chairs with umbrellas and also in the back off the Inn there was a patio with the same.
We felt very much at home and relaxed at the Hanover House. We never really had to ask for anything as it was all there for us if we needed it. Steve runs a very professional business here but makes it a very comfortable experience. Just what we were looking for - away from the hustle and bustle of everyday living. We would highly recommend The Hanover House. The value for what you get is exceptional considering the other B&B's and places to stay in this particular area. We would come back here first before considering any other place on the island.

The most wonderful part of our trip to the Northeast this July was our stay at the Hanover House Inn. Steve and Judy, the owners could not have been more attentitve to every detail possible. The rooms have THE MOST comfortable beds and bathrobes immaginable. It is also important to mention how delicious the breakfasts are which include a secret recipe for the waffles. The Inn's proximity to the ferry and bus lines makes bringing a car on the island unnecessary. I can only say that I wish we lived much closer so we can visit more often. Lucky for our daughter who came with us that she is only an hour away and plans to make this Inn her much needed med school get-a-way.

We went to the Hanover House for a three-day off-season trip last weekend. Overall, we had a great trip (Martha's Vineyard is a fantastic location - very romantic and rich history), but our experience with the Inn was very painful. Yes, as other reviewers have pointed out in great detail, the staff is very friendly and helpful with directions and suggestions for day-trips, the place does have a very cosy feel, and the breakfast is pretty good (though the waffles get old quickly, and I've seen better at other New England B&B's). On the other hand, both the people and the facilities at the Hanover House seemed pretty unreliable, and we felt very unfairly treated at several points during our stay:

1) No-one there for check-in:
When we arrived (a bit earlier than we had anticipated, but still several hours after regular check-in time), there was noone to welcome us or let us into our rooms: the place was literally empty. We had to call the innkeeper, and wait for 20 minutes. It was freezing cold outside, and all we wanted was a nice hot shower, so you can imagine our frustration.

2) Reserved room not available:
When the innkeeper (or rather his replacement, because the innkeeper turned out to be on vacation) finally arrived, she asked us to pay the full amount of our stay upfront. She then proceeded to show us our room (nr 14, the "Beach Bungalow", which by the way isn't on the beach at all). It turned out that the heating in the room was completely broken (it was literally freezing in there), so she suggested that we stay in another room. After showing us the remaining empty rooms, we reluctantly accepted the next-best alternative (room nr. 8, "Inside Warmth"), which was much smaller than the room we had booked.

Adding insult to injury, the innkeeper seemed very unwilling to refund the price difference between the two rooms: she claimed she didn't know exactly how much the smaller room cost, that she needed to look it up on the computer, that she didn't know how to credit our credit card with the difference, etc., and that we would take care of it the following morning.

3) No hot water:
Once we had gotten ourselves installed in our room, it turned out that there was no hot water. After calling the innkeeper (she had again left, and it took her about 15 minutes to arrive), she looked into it, said she had turned the water boiler on, and that we would have hot water in two hours. As we expected, a few hours later (it was now 10pm in the evening), still no hot water. We were (understandably, I think) starting to get seriously angry at this point. We called the innkeeper again, and requested that it would be fixed right away, threatening that we would leave and look for another place to stay instead. She said that she couldn't get the plumber to come this late in the evening, but that she would have it fixed first thing in the morning, and that she would compensate us by not charging us for that first night. Again, since we already paid for our stay in full upon arrival, we reluctantly accepted. Fortunately, the following morning, the hot water did work properly.

4) So-so facilities:
The room we stayed in was definitely cosy and romantic, but also quite old. In addition, there was literally no wardrobe storage, except for a rack with 4 coathangers and a few small drawers, so we had to put our clothes on the chair/sofa. The bathroom was tiny, and had an extremely noisy ventilating unit.

I also noticed that some of the other rooms we were shown are extremely noisy, especially the front rooms, in which the busy traffic on Edgartown Road is clearly audible.

5) Bait-and-switch tactics:
I already explained how we had to pay the full amount for our stay upon check-in, before we were told that the room we had booked wasn't available due to heating problems. Also, we had been promised a full free night in compensation for the lack of hot water in our room.

However, come check-out, when we asked to be refunded the amound the innkeeper owed us (i.e., the price difference between our originally booked room and the smaller room we actually stayed in, plus the above-mentioned free night), I noticed that the total she had calculated was a lot smaller than I expected. After pushing the innkeeper a bit, she told me that she had changed her mind (supposedly after talking with the owner of the place), and that she now felt that a 50% discount on the first night was sufficient compensation for the fact that we didn't have hot water. I obviously complained, told her I found it unacceptable that she hadn't told us this upfront, etc., but she wouldn't budge. Since I basically had the choice between accepting the 50% discount or making a huge scene, I went with the former... I left with the feeling of being massively ripped off, not so much because of the amount (the 50% discount boiled down to about $50 after tax) but because she promised us a full free night in order to get us to stay in a room with no hot water, and later reneged. In my view, this type of bait-and-switch tactics is completely unprofessional and unacceptable, and unworthy of a place that prides itself on the friendly treatment of its guest.

To be fair, there's a few great things about the Hanover House as well: they have excellent complimentary coffee available for the full day, and they have a nice lounge were guests can relax and watch TV. I also imagine that the place is probably run a lot better during the summer months, when the owner is there full-time. Nevertheless, I recommend thinking twice before going here, and whatever you do, DO NOT PAY UPFRONT like we did, because you have no leverage whatsoever anymore in case things turn sour during your stay.

As the owner of the Inn, I am concerned when a guest feels they have been treated unfairly. We make every effort to assure our guests are treated well from their first phone call to their departure after their stay. We establish expectations when potential guests call and we work hard to meet those expectations throughout their stay. Our repeat guest and word of mouth reservations reflect the dedication we have made to make sure every experience with our inn is worthy of the highest recommendation. At times, rare as they are, things happen to disrupt our efforts. In this case, a few things happened that were beyond our control, and gave this guest an upsetting beginning to their stay. We apologize to them for those things, but let me assure our future guests that these events are extremely rare, and we do, and did for the reviewing guest, take appropriate and fair corrective action when those rare events arise. First, our innkeeper was on an errand when they arrived, because the previous night she had confirmed their arrival time with them (we do have fewer people on staff in the winter, since demand is so much less). Our innkeeper scheduled her activities to assure that a person would be on the grounds when they arrived. They did not arrive when they had said, so she was not immediately available. As directed by the sign on the desk, which is always there in case of an unexpected event, they called the innkeeper to inform her of their arrival and had to wait about 10 minutes in a heated porch for our innkeeper to get back. Second, the heat and hot water did fail in the unit that they had requested. We were not aware of any issue until they were in the room. Another guest had been in the room recently, the room had been prepared for the new arrival, and as is our custom, the room had be inspected and cleared for their arrival that day. No problems had been identified. Cleary the issues, which are linked, had develop during that day. Since immediate repair was not possible, we moved them to an alternative room with a canopy bed, full bath and all of our other amenities, including 600 thread count all cotton sheets, luxurious bedding, top of the line beds, spa quality robes and towels, etc.. It is a beautiful recently redecorated room, and is in high demand throughout the year. It was not a bait and switch, and we treated them fairly on the refund. We refunded them the difference in the prices between the two rooms, and in addition, they received 50% off the room rate for the new room for that first night. In total, excluding taxes, they paid $200 for all three nights in a beautiful room. During the summer, the room rate for their room is over $200 dollars for one night, and as I said above, in high demand. As far as our food is concerned, our guest book is filled with compliments for our menu; especially, the waffles. We also have egg dishes, yogurt, fresh fruit, country style potatoes, and other items common to an inn breakfast. Oh, yes, our breakfast is included in the room rate. We hope you will visit our inn and discover the quality of our establishment for yourselves. Steve Perlman, Owner

There was a feces stain on the bed cover. The manager argued with me about what it was instead of apologizing. I know feces when I smell it and that’s exactly what it was. The fact my bed had feces on it was only made worse by the manager telling me it was either transfer from the cleaning person not changing gloves or chocolate. Either way the room was unsanitary. Never have I paid $300 for a bed with poop in it. Not worth it. Save yourself the eventual visit to the doctor for your pink eye.

There was not a feces stain on the top, all white, bed sheet. That was a piece of chocolate that you dropped off of one of the three chocolate bars that you had in your room. You had been in the room for over 7 hours by the time you asked me to change the sheets. Plus you had sat up on the bed, right on top of the spot. Since it was a dark fresh spot, not there when you checked in, as you would have noticed it right away, we have to say it was chocolate. Now if it was feces on the all white bed cover, you placed it there. We cleaned your room top to bottom after you notified us that you were unhappy. But, it was not there when you checked in and your room was clean and sanitary. You created the entire situation and made everyone in your party feel uncomfortable. You told me on your first night that I had ruined your vacation. I am sorry that you are such a fragile person and could not hold up to a small spot, no bigger than a dime, on a top cover of a bed sheet. That you made such a huge scene about unsanitary conditions. After the weekend you should have chosen to "let it go", but alas you decided to go public and now the truth comes out. We hope you chose to stay somewhere else next time. Lisa

My wife and I checked into the Hanover House Inn, looking forward to a quiet and relaxing visit to Martha’s Vineyard. The advertisement for the inn states that it is “Perfect for that quiet romantic stay you wanted.” The room that we reserved was called “Room 6—A Quiet Escape.”

It was anything but quiet. There was a wedding party booked into the inn, and they proceeded to party from approximately 4:00 pm until 10:15 pm on a small deck right outside our door, making it difficult for us to relax and enjoy our stay. They were not raucous or out of line in any way. However, it was just loud enough to be disturbing.

I called the front desk to complain but there was no one available so I left a voice mail message. My wife subsequently went to the front desk but no one was on duty and there was a sign to call the owner if there was a problem. She did so and was told that he would call over to the inn to take care of it. He did not offer any apologies or express any concerns about the party.

The party was still going on at 10:15 pm, when the inn asks guests to be quiet, so I called the owner, Steve Perlman and left him a voice mail message, complaining about the party and asking him to call me back.

I never received a call back so I called him the next morning. He immediately became extremely defensive and stated several times that there are weddings all over the island every weekend, implying that it was ok to be situated in a room next to a party for 6 hours. He stated as long as the party was not raucous, he was not going to interfere. I stated that my complaint was not with the wedding group and the fact that they were holding a party. It was that we should have been informed when we checked in and been offered alternate accommodations, if available (he also owns the Clark House, right next door) or been offered some type of a refund. He refused to acknowledge that courtesy and continued to insist that the wedding group had a right to party and that we should have been ok with it.

I have stayed in hundreds of hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts over 40 years and have never been treated so rudely and discourteously by an owner or staff. Instead of sincerely apologizing and bending over backwards to rectify the situation, he in effect said, “Tough luck, that’s the way it goes.” I asked if we could check out and get a refund for the second night, as we no longer wanted to stay in an establishment where guests were treated in this manner. He was inflexible and would not budge. We ended up moving to another inn and eating the cost of the room.

Finally, I said that I was planning to write a review of the inn online and relate my experience. He stated that if I did that he would write a rebuttal and include my name. I said that it was a violation of my privacy to include my name, and he responded by stating that once I submit a review online, I give up my rights to privacy and he is entitled to share my name with the rest of the world. This exemplifies the type of treatment I received from the owner. It was appalling and very disturbing.

By the way, the room and the inn itself were ok, nothing to write home about. It was a little tired looking and rustic, certainly not worth the price. If you want a quiet and relaxing stay on Martha’s Vineyard, I suggest you look elsewhere.

For the first time in years we made a reservation without checking the trip advisor reviews first - big mistake.

We received a phone call on Thursday (check in day) asking what time we would be arriving so they had the room ready for us, we thought this was a nice and considerate thing to do.... You would think however that knowing what time we were arriving someone would actually be there to greet us, there wasn't.

We were instead greeted by a huge stack of UPS boxes, 2 other couples checking in and a dingy sign with a post it that was all crinkled that said "gone to the beach be back around 5". We were then instructed to sign the reservation slip which had a huge list of rules on it but didn't get a copy. So you agree to obey rules that you don't have a copy of - super professional!!! One of the rules was so ignorant it was laughable " don't leave a message for the staff on the intercom instead call this number" are you f-ing kidding me?!

The paper that came with our key also told us TO CALL THEM AND LET THEM KNOW WE ARRIVED - riiiight because they couldn't be bothered to be there for check-in I'm supposed to call them.

We picked room 16 because it had a "patio" we were still looking for that when we checked out.

The room was disgusting - dust everywhere ... Checked the ceiling fan above the bed - covered with it. The tops of mirrors and photos - covered. The stand for the laughable suggestion of a tv was also dusty. The best part was the tip envelope stated that they pride themselves in the cleanliness of their rooms. Oh and to add to that the hotel name on the envelope wasn't for the in. We were staying at it was for the "Twin Oaks Inn"

The "Twin Oaks Inn" was also all over the linens. We thought we were staying at The Hanover House

This place needs a Hotel Impossible kick in the pants - the whole time we were there we didn't see the owner or the manager. A housekeeper showed up and we said we would be gone in 30 minutes, but the room was never cleaned in the 10 hours we were away that day. The morning we left there was also no one there, didn't see a drop box for the key so just left it on the counter.

Hey Amanda, It hurts me that you think of us as laughable and disgusting, for we never intend to come across that way. I'm very sorry you got that impression. In regards to the "gone to the beach" sign: I have an extremely hardworking staff that works multiple jobs, so I decided to start calling all our reservations to let them know the staff would be gone for a while during the day. I defend this decision as it allows my wonderful employees to catch a break and get some well-deserved beach time. I'm confused when you say that you never saw a manager during your stay. I'm there every morning at the desk, so you would've had to see me as you walked to breakfast. I try very hard to make myself accessible, but I am sorry if you didn't get this impression. As for the cleanliness: I apologize that the room was not to your liking. I read this and immediately brought staff to check afterward -- the room looked great to us, so I'm not sure what dust and dirt you were referring to. Regardless of my concerns, overall, I do apologize that you had a bad time here. I see where you are coming from, however, I really hope you can see where I'm coming from, too. If you have anymore questions or would like to talk about this more, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Sincerely, Stephen - Owner

After reviewing other Trip Advisor comments about this facility, I made a reservation for a single nights visit which turned out to be very nice indeed. Staying in room 3 was delightful. The room has been recently refreshed with new blue paint, Nice pictures a new mattress and is perfectly adequate for a single person or couple. Of particular note are the magnificent bath towels & the very nice toiletry selection provided by the innkeeper. The only word of caution is that the toilet is in a fairly tight space such that a large person may not find it comfortable. Not a criticism, just a word of advice.

The Hanover House is one of two facilities on the same piece of property, the other being the Clarke House. I was greeted by the property manager, and quickly and pleasantly checked in and escorted to my room after a quick explanation of all of the various amenities of the property. My commitments for the trip did not allow me to take advantage of all of them, but clearly this facility is looking out for its guests in a professional fashion. I can say that the complementary lemonade and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies were delicious!

They include a complementary breakfast is served buffet style and the offering is very extensive so that anyone regardless of dietary preferences should find more than enough to get you started for your day on Martha's Vineyard. The gentleman who owns both properties visited with each of the guests during the breakfast hour and he had his property manager and other staff clearly go out of their way to make your visit top-notch. I can recommend the Hannover house without hesitation.

The pictures show the entrance to Room 3 off a brand-new and beautiful deck area, a shot of the attractively made up a bed and some of the furnishings in this recently renovated room and a shot of a beach overlooking the marina and the Ferry facility which is a short, less than a 10 minute walk away.

I normally would not send a negative review to any business if i did not consider it needed to be known. Now i understand that the policy that is set forth by business owners have always been to try to protect not only the consumer but also the business in questions. I recently had reservations at the Hanover House in Martha's Vineyard for one night on November 23, 2011. i was visiting New England for the third time and have always had a wonderful trip until now, we visited New England from Vermont, New Hampshire and all the way down to Martha's Vineyard MA.and all in between it was fantastic i spent over $4000.00 dollars on this trip, we were in Jefferson New Hampshire and got snowed in that early morning so i called to let the Hanover House know that we may not be able to get out due to this mother nature snow, i was advised that i would still be charged for this room now i know that this is policy but you would think that the business would at least give me a break due to mother nature but NO i personally would not recommend this inn to anyone if personally asked. Even with this small amount of money that i feel was taken due to greed i would recommend all to visit New England..........Mr. Graves

I just spent Thanksgiving on Martha's Vineyard with my family.
We had a wonderful time. What a beautiful island!

The only negative, and a major one, was our B&B, the Hanover House. The two buildings (Hanover House and Clarke House) need A LOT of repair and renovation. Do not trust the pretty pictures. The layout of some of the room is also most unusual...
More importantly, service was TERRIBLE. We experienced several totally unacceptable issues but neither the Manager nor the Owner (whom we called) seemed to care.
We will most certainly never go back to this property.
