- carolynl654Detroit93 contributionsVery nice vacation spot for a fun beach day. We went to Adrenaline Beach and that spot worked out great for the whole family. There are basketball courts and soccer game, plenty of space and open chairs. We tried going to Columbus Cove and changed our minds. It was way too small of a swimming area with a very steep drop off. There were hundreds of lounge chairs lined up in a relatively small area. However, if you’re looking for shade, there are plenty of shaded chairs at Columbus Cove. Take the tram, it’s a longer walk for older people. We snorkeled at Adrenaline Beach, it was ok if you can get there first thing in the morning. As the day progresses, the visibility decreases to almost nothing. Beware! The water is very very shallow for the majority of the area and dotted with large coral and rocks. If you can snorkel without touch the bottom, you’ll be able to see parrot fish, eel, sea anemone, sea urchins and various other fish. At the buoy line, it gets much deeper and there are 3 artificial reefs out there as well.
There is a local market zone and they can get pushy so be prepared for that. There are no other stores. It's ludicrous.

Haiti is rich in history and this place captures Haiti's history like no other place in Haiti. The hike up and down is brutal, so make sure you train your body 2 to 3 months in advance if you are not an active person. I used music to motivate me. The downside to this trip is the constant begging from those who either live in the area or staff that works there. They cluster around me in a way that was uncomfortable. They don't mean any harm and they backed off when I told them "no thank you," but for a tourist location I do expect less harassment. Another thing that bothered me is the treatment to the horses that transports customers to and from the Citadel. They constantly whipped their horses, so I decided not to use the horse because of this. Other than those 2 things, I would strongly recommend going to this place. There you will see that Haiti is not a "@#$thole," it's the "Pearl of the Antilles" of the Caribbean. A must see if you go to the north side of Haiti. - gailj927Jamaica, NY53 contributionsI had NO idea what i was facing. The Guides were very patient and understanding. It's a very strenuous and rigorous hike. Be prepared to have moments of doubt if you've never done this before. The views are truly breathtaking. This is a challenge to your Will within to complete the course. Once you reach the top, you're rewarded with an Amazing ice cold water bath that feels like the best thing in the world!! - Diane HCharlottesville, VA68 contributionsDifficult to get to, but entirely worth it! Two options, basically--either boat from Petit Goave or hiking in. I chose the boat, arranged through the Fort Royal Hotel. They include a picnic lunch--basically carried in and reheated there. However, there are restaurants on the beach and you could order food there--which is probably preferable. When I went it was a weekday and there were no other visitors. - Swede-JohansenStockholm, Sweden50 contributionsI arranged the visit directly with the Barbancourt destillery. The Barbancourt employee that I had contact with was very friendly and helpful. I also know that for example the Decameron resort arranges bus tours to the destillery.
It can be hard to find, but it is the road next after, or before depending on which way you are travelling from, the Ministry of Agriculture. There is a big Barbancourt commercial sign where the road leading to the distillery is located.
The tour lasted about 2 hours with the tasting. The guide was professional and answered questions in a detailed way.The tour was in French, but you are able to ask the guide questions in English.
The whole process, from the unloading of the sugercanes to the final rum product was included in the tour.
After the tour there was a degestion of all the Barbancourt rums (not the 150 cuvee ans though) together with snacks. They also provided water bottles during the tasting. If you wanted to mix the rum there also was available juice.
The last stop was at the shop there you could buy rum and rum glasses etcetera.
The eight years old rum is at 17 USD and the fifteen years old is at 45 USD.
Also they have a special edition that I think only is available at the destillery. It is a anniversery edition called the "150 cuvee ans". This rum is sold for 300 USD. The bottle is really beautiful and if I understood it right it consists of matured rum that was saved from the barrels that were destroyed after the earthquake in 2010. The bouquet and taste are said to be unique.

Even if that isn't your interest, you'll be amazed with how they turn a metal barrel into works of art. Cutting and flattening the scrap metal, they sand and smooth the pieces before stenciling patterns and cutting out intricate designs. The most popular and intriguing are the trees of life. One can imagine taking small scissors to paper, known as scherenschnitte, and coming up with such a delicate picture of silhouettes, scenery or snowflakes, but this is metal !
The artists always invite you into their workshop, which doubles as a gallery. Yes, they are anxious to sell their crafts, and bargaining is the name of the game, so play along. We bought an incredible 16 x 16 inch tree of life for $20. Knowing the average wage in this, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, is only two dollars a day, we asked if the artist would let us take a picture of him beside his work, then paid him a little more. Even without buying their work, they enjoy showing you their art, and it's fun to compare styles and talents.
For those with more eccentric tastes, there are artists who create sculptures out of "junk." How about an angel whose wings are made from half the casing of a rotary fan. Then there was the full size person riding an actual bicycle, all made out of metal.
While walking through the village, you hear the sound of chisels and tools striking metal, as the next piece of artwork is being created. It's amazing.
Everyone deals in American dollars, but make sure you bring smaller denominations.
