message 12: by Matt (new)

Matt Why are there Stephen King books on this list. Did someone misunderstand what the term "graphic novel" means?

message 13: by Katie (new)

Katie There are Stephen King graphic novels based on his Dark Tower series... I don't know what "It" is doing up there. There's also a ton of "non volume one" entries that need deletion.

Devan, Sarcasm Expert YES! DeathNote!

Matt Katie wrote: "There are Stephen King graphic novels based on his Dark Tower series... I don't know what 'It' is doing up there. There's also a ton of 'non volume one' entries that need deletion."

Yeah, I understand the Dark Tower graphic novels being on there, but there are other Stephen King prose novels, even aside from It, that are on this list (i.e., The Green Mile, Pet Sematary, The Dead Zone). Like I said, all I can figure is that the person/people who put them on the list must not have realized what a graphic novel was. (Perhaps they just thought it meant a novel that contains graphic content, like violence or sex.)

message 16: by Who? (new)

Who? twilight should b on there

Come on! Twilight doesn't even have any pictures. That's all anyone thinks about nowadays

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

How is it that "non-volume ones" are not eligible? By the same token, Batman Dark Victory shouldn't be allowed since it is the sequel to The Long Halloween. It doesn't make any sense, considering the various volumes make up different stories, generally. Some volumes are better than others.

message 20: by Polstar (new)

Polstar Garth Ennis is a genius :) Why are all The Boys on here?

message 21: by Jc11king (new)

Jc11king What the hell?

"It" is not a graphic-novel!!!

message 22: by Chris (new)

Chris Johnson Manga shouldnt be on here. I think graphic novel I think "Comics" you know, even though manga is japanese comics blah. But yeah, Watchmens the King, Dark Knight Returns is prince, and Sin City stories takes the third place bronze crown. Martha Washington by Frank Miller is like the best graphic novel made in the past 10 or so years man!

message 23: by Zeta_comics (new)

Zeta_comics Manga should most definitely be here. Maybe not series but Gekiga (which is the homologue to Graphic Novels, though actually older) should.
But there are western long series like Y: The Last Man so I don't see why there can't be a Death Note.

Kirsten Chris wrote: "Manga shouldnt be on here. I think graphic novel I think "Comics" you know, even though manga is japanese comics blah."

That's... a pretty racist statement. A graphic novel is a novel or story told with pictures and words, or, as Random House tells us, "a novel in the form of comic strips." There is certainly no specification about country of origin. Just because the phrase graphic novel doesn't conjure Japanese stories in your head doesn't mean that Japanese graphic novels shouldn't be on this list.

Sex, nudity, violence.

message 38: by Laura (new)

Laura I was actually trying to figure out the difference between manga, comic, and graphic novel, and one of the main things I found was that graphic novels are considered a complete story in one book, with any sequels having it's own unique storyline. Since most manga is told one chapter at a time and published later in volumes(not with their own complete stories), I would also consider manga not being graphic novels. That's not the technical definition, I know, but it does seem to be the accepted idea.

Graphic novels are usually a collection of individual comics (i.e., Watchmen collected the 12 volumes); Manga is the Japanese version of comics with their own brand of Graphic novels collecting different parts.

I'm sorry but when did all forms of storytelling suddenly become offshoots of the novel? You're right in shooting Chris down but claiming that a comic book is "a novel in the form of comic strips." is misleading and insulting.

At no point in a comics conception is it a novel, or anything else but a comic; written in a script form specifically designed to be presented as comics and nothing else.

Storytelling is not intrinsically tied to the novel, and stories are not all by default novels that are whimsically converted into lesser forms.

You seriously have too much time on your hands if you can go through 1500+ listings AND have time to post what you removed five times.

Elgaroo Brenza Jonathan wrote: "Laura wrote: "I was actually trying to figure out the difference between manga, comic, and graphic novel, and one of the main things I found was that graphic novels are considered a complete story ..."

I think the distinction comes from the difference between a self-contained story with a beginning, middle, and end, and the more traditional American (and less often Japanese as well...) mainstream / superhero series / franchise that is basically intended to just go on forever, or not with any intentional end in sight, despite various occasional story arcs, like a soap opera...

Weather the stories were originally serialized or not I think is pretty irrelevant. Weren't a number of English literary classics originally serialized...? That's really quite an arbitrary distinction; what if the artist had the story fully complete (even just in their head) despite only publishing individual chapters at a time...? If it is all one coherent story, what functional difference to a later reader could it possibly make...?

I would by that definition preclude collections of random, unrelated short stories, but keep them if they were say an even vaguely chronological telling of a particular character's story or something, as in most autobiographical works. I'm not much for making such stark, divisive distinctions though... The term "graphic novel" has come commonly to mean pretty much any comics work that is not your typical, low-brow, mainstream action or superhero comic, and I see nothing wrong with sharing them all freely here, though clearly superhero comics are taking the term back to meaning concise story-arc collections, intending to lend them an air of artistic credibility, but that's not to say that superhero comics HAVE to be low-brow; there are certainly exceptions even here, as everywhere.

If a story is distinctly its own, then by all means, but if it really is just one segment of a larger story, listing every single volume completely screws up the comparative functionality of having a list; a story with many volumes may end up ranked lower than a single volume story, all of the numerous sequels end up crowding the heck out of the list and driving lower rankings further down where MANY fewer people will see them, etc... Total mess. Pref keep it simple, no?

message 50: by Rakibul (new)

Rakibul Rabby How did Haven: A Graphic Novel reached so high in this list with 28 votes when the actual book has only 14 ratings? Can someone explain?

And also both Maus and Bone has 2 editions, one 1st volume and one combined edition. There should be only one in my opinion.
