A brush fire that started Tuesday at Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area in Owings Mills has been contained, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.
The blaze began at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday as a three-alarm brush fire in the area of Deer Park Road and Berrymans Lane. It was upgraded to an eight-alarm fire later in the afternoon as it spread throughout the park. The fire department said the fire was contained early Wednesday morning.
About 200 firefighters from departments across Central Maryland came to battle the blaze, according to fire officials.
Crews remained on scene overnight to battle the blaze, according to the fire department.
About 29 homes in the area have been evacuated, according to the fire department.
No injuries have been reported but Baltimore County Fire is instructing people to avoid the area, department spokesperson Elise Armacost said.
“This is an unusually significant brush fire,” Armacost said.
Several Maryland National Guard helicopters dropped water on the blaze throughout Tuesday evening.
Gov. Wes Moore tweeted that his office is closely monitoring the brush fire, and state agencies are on-site to aid firefighters.
The American Red Cross and Baltimore County Department of Emergency Management are working to ensure the displaced residents have shelter, food and water.
“In the days and weeks to come, volunteer team members will continue to work with the nearly 30 households impacted to provide additional recovery resources and help those affected get on the road to recovery,” the Red Cross said in a news release Tuesday evening.
