Pros
Auto-Owners has made a significant investment in my continuing education. The company has an agreement with The Institutes, and employees can take up to 5 classes per year to advance their education. The company pays us every 2 weeks. Expenses are reimbursed promptly. The relationships with agents are great. The company management treats its employees very courteously, and new hires have an opportunity to meet with the president as well as several levels of management. The group training programs, such as the underwriting schools, are terrific. They are interactive and interesting. The "simple human sense" motto is usually the first and best way to solve a problem. The director of our department does one-on-ones with all people in the group. This is a big plus. The benefits are good. There is an annual holiday bonus that is typically 1% of salary per year (capped at 10%). I understand the board has also voted on annual company performance bonuses in previous years (the past 2 years have not been good to the insurance business due to property/casualty losses), and my coworkers told me those were quite generous.
Cons
There are some things I'd like to improve in my department regarding training I received to do my specific job. I would have made fewer mistakes if I had been given an opportunity to practice some skills before going into the field. We don't have many technical bulletins to share with our customers (we seem a little behind the competition in this regard).

- 2.0Branch Claims RepresentativeFormer Employee, more than 5 yearsColumbia, MO
Pros
You will get a lot of experience extremely fast. If you come in with no insurance experience, you will not get as many difficult claims for a very long time and you likely will get to build your inventory. Otherwise in the past, the people that come in with claims experience will get someone else's inventory after the first couple of weeks.
Cons
You will not get adequate training. You better be ambitious if you want to learn otherwise you will sink fast. There is extremely high turnover because the workload is unsustainable and then when those people leave you get their files. There are very few reps that last 5 years. The complexity of the claims is also not well balanced. The newer people can float for at least 6months to a year before they get an easy bodily injury file. People with experience get loaded up with anything the other people with the same job title as you can't handle.

- 4.0Software EngineerFormer Employee, more than 8 yearsLansing, MI
Pros
Stable, not stressful, good bonuses (if the company is doing well), good benefits (although pension gets worse every year).
Cons
Low base pay, last few years the profit sharing bonus wasn't approved, and lack of surrounding talent so it's hard to improve through your peers (there are a few good ones), lots of politics.
- 3.0Commercial UnderwriterCurrent EmployeeBroomfield, CO
Pros
The company is stable. There is a Christmas bonus
Cons
Turn-over is high due to lower pay. People will stay long enough train and then leave for better opportunities, which puts more strain on the senior staff.

Pros
The hours are great, the benefits are good. PTO, vacation and sick time. 401k, pension which invested at 5 years.
Cons
The training and the pay is a little low. The training will take place over the computer through messaging or comments even when the trainer is in the office. I don’t exactly care for this style of training.
