DENTON - One person has died, a second person is critically injured and more than a dozen tenants are displaced after a fire broke out overnight in Denton.

Just before 2 a.m., a fire at an apartment building in the 1200 block of Dallas Drive was reported. The caller said people were trapped on the upper floor by the fire and unable to escape.

A DFD fire engine and ambulance arrived on the scene within 6 minutes and reported heavy fire conditions and multiple victims trapped. Crews immediately began fighting the fire and working to get the victims out. Crews successfully rescued one victim from a second-story unit. During the search for potential victims, crews found one male who had died.

A 2nd alarm was called at 2:15 a.m., bringing the total response to 7 fire engines, 1 Truck, 4 MICUs, 3 Chief Officers, and 4 Fire Marshals.

Crews were able to get the fire under control around 2:45 a.m. Eight units in the building were heavily damaged.

The City of Denton Fire Department says it notified the Red Cross of over 20 displaced victims in the 2-story, 16-unit building.

At this time, the DFD Fire Marshal's Office ruled this fire as "undetermined" due to the number of possible heat sources and the large volume of contents in the apartment.
