- Hasnah1962Singapore, Singapore2,005 contributionsThe Grand Mosque of Baiturrahman has bright white walls and majestic black domes. This 130-year old grand mosque was here that hundreds of people sought refuge during the 2004 tsunami that destroyed and demolished most of the landscape of the city. It is more than just a masterpiece of Islamic architecture in the nation, its survival from the tsunami is viewed by many residents as the chosen special.
We managed to perform our afternoon prayer here.Written March 8, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Short sleeves are fine most of the time but not entering the mosque. (It’s just a bit hot for covering up, but u will definitely get used to u by time)
Highly recommended to go there once in a life time! You can see & feel how the local live their life. Aceh offers different Indonesian culture for its heavy Muslim religion.

Banda Aceh was the most affected location, with over 160,000 deaths. It's an impressive visit, especially when you enter. You walk through a damp corridor and hear the sound that was heard when the tsunami hit the city.
As a museum, it's not very large. There are many photos showing the condition of the city after the tsunami. And there are certain messages that are a bit questionable from my perspective (for example, there is a photo of the undamaged mosque with the surrounding area in ruins and a message mentioning divine intervention. But is it really a divine matter or a question of construction quality? I suppose it depends on one's beliefs).
In any case, if you're in Banda Aceh, the museum is a must-visit.Written November 7, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Additionally, ships that were at sea ended up in the middle of the city. The PLTD Apung 1 was a power-generating ship and is now stranded in the city. Entry is by donation, but it's worth seeing a ship of these dimensions; it's impressive.Written November 11, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The huts are simple and clean and there are shared toilets and showers. The food was every day freshly cooked and delicious. Dicky and the staff helped us with everything. We liked especially the small size of the island, so that there were not a lot of people and it was always really quite.Written April 7, 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
