William Mounger (or Mongre or Monger) was baptized in London on 14 Nov 1592. He was the son of Benjamin Mounger and Jane Hesterby.[1] He was a citizen mercer of London and resided at one time in St. Olave's Southwark, Surrey in the London suburbs, but he owned a number of properties scattered around England.[2] He was involved in a number of lawsuits during his life, and these reveal much information about him, including that his wife (as of 1635) was named Ann.[3] In 1639, he and Ann were named as defendants in a suit by Edward Bosden and his wife Elizabeth Bosden along with codefendants Sir Thomas Fanshaw, John Buckner and Frere Durden[4].[5] John Buckner (also a London mercer) and Edward Bosden were the husbands of two daughters of London stationer Thomas Adams, Mary and Elizabeth,[6] so it is possible that this was connected with their inheritance and that Ann was their youngest sister named in Adams' 1619 will.[7] This is confirmed by an entry in the St Olave's parish registers showing the marriage (by license) of William Monger and Ann Adames on 18 Feb 1622.
According to Boyds Inhabitants of London, he secondly married Judith Dudley in 1647.[8]
He probably had one son, also named William, who is listed in the registers of the London Merchant Taylor's school in July 1644 as "William Monger only son of William citizen and mercer b in par of St Olave Southwark 22 Feb 1631".[9]
