Editorial Reviews
From the Author
While my first goal was to write a story that was fast-moving, funny, and engaging, I had one other goal for this novel: For years, the readers of my blog, who are mostly business people and libertarians, have voiced a common complaint about modern novels: Why are corporate executives always portrayed in novels as villains, and why are the folks who cause them so much trouble - lawyers, government employees, and the media - always treated as heroes? In my novel, I turn the table on these traditional portrayals, finding both heroes and humor in the business world. I hope those of you who have shared this same frustration with the outlook of modern fiction will find this book refreshing.
From the Inside Flap
Her plans begin to awry when she receives an invitation for a job interview with Preston Marsh, the quirky millionaire who has built his fortune on oddball businesses from selling designer musical tones to harvesting coins in fountains. Marsh convinces Susan to abandon her path of least resistance to work in his new business called BMOC, which guarantees its student clients that it will make them popular.
But nothing in the job description prepares Susan for getting sent to LA to investigate a young woman's suicide. Susan has to struggle to adapt her business school training to what increasingly appears to be a murder investigation, as a consortium of media companies, tort lawyers, and even a US Senator fight to hide the truth.
And that was before they started shooting at her...

A lot of the action takes place in Hollyweird and the greater Lalaland part of California so there's plenty of Southern California stereotypes to mock as well. All of this is good, and droll, and enjoyable.
But there's a possible serious subtext about how ethically challenged trial lawyers and media moguls can ruin innocents in ways that are actually worse than the mafia crooks they hook up with (in this book). It's not a big part of the book, but it does give the book a bit more depth than it would have as a light-hearted crime novel
Why do otherwise good wordsmiths insist on cussing in a fashion that would embarrass a sailor? Possibly it is that this particular sailor is too old for the vulgarity of language today. I certainly would not recommend the language in "BMOC" to my pastor, or to my murder mystery fan wife, (for whom I bought the book) for example.
Come on, Mr. Meyer! Herman Wouk, James Michner, Leon Uris, Thomas Heggen et al seemed to be able to write dialogue without having to resort to the cheapness of the dreary f___ word, the explicitness of a young heroine grabbing a handful of condoms and heading out for a night of stated promiscuity. Part of being a hero is to be held to a moral standard. Part of being a writer is learning how to imply without being obvious.
I did not finish the book. I prefer my luscious double chocolate cake to be free of cockroaches.
Reader complaints about the language seem ridiculous. The book is PG-rated at worst. Those who mind a little realism in their books should stick to reading children’s books written before 1960.
So Mr. Meyer, when will you give us another treat?
It is fast paced, suspenseful and very funny. The characters are quirky but believable...well kinda believable but it does not matter as the pace moves along from one surprise to the next with hilarious send-ups of everything from Harvard to TV News to clerks at Macy's.
However under the quirky characters and humor lies and insight into our world and how it operates. There is a message, but it is not the usual shallow Hollywood pap it is a message delivered with insight, fun and good humor.
The book has a quick pace, and makes for the type of enjoyable book where you regret finishing it too fast.
A fun, easy read - great for a holiday.
