David O'Neal was born around 1574 in England. Parents unknown. At the age of 16 he was the cook on the ship, John Evangelist, that came to America in search of the "Lost Colony" on Roanoke Island in what was known then as the Province of Carolina (North Carolina).

In a storm they were ship wrecked on Hatteras Island. Most of the men perished. Several men, including David, survived. They became part of the tribe of the Kinnakeet Indians. David and other members of the crew intermarried. David named his wife Morning Dew. They had a son, John.
David and Morning Dew are both buried somewhere on Hatteras Island.
