He was the son of Nathaniel and Nancy (Finley) Estes.
He married Elizabeth Richardson about 1822 in Vironas, South Carolina.
Their known children were: James Nathaniel, Samuel, Nancy Caroline, William, Mary, Margaret Elizabeth, Thomas G., Elizabeth Jane and Francis Marion Estes.

About 1833, Thomas and family moved from South Carolina to Gwinnett County, Georgia and was listed on the 1840 census there. Their eldest son, James Nathaniel, died while serving in Captain James Tuggle's Company, stationed at Fort Wool, Georgia, during the Indian Wars.

Thomas Estes was not on the 1850 census in Gwinnett County. He and his family have not been found on the 1850 census. In 1860, his wife (widow?) was living in Hart County, Georgia with her sons, William and Francis Marion.

Gravesite Details

He may have been buried, in an unmarked grave, in Reed Creek cemetery or in the Estes Cemetery. The Estes Cemetery was moved to the Reed Creek Baptist Church cemetery when Hartwell Dam was constructed around 1956.
