Good experience but poor leadership
Field Engineer (Former Employee) - Los Angeles, CA - September 7, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThey’re definitely one of the larger GC’s which is good if you need to relocate in the US. Their benefits are great which will save you money on health and dental claims. However, even with all the benefits this company like many other GC’s can’t seem to break away from the old school mentality of sink or swim and overworking employees. Depending on which regional office you get hired out of and the project team they put you on you will either have a great experience or be miserable. They will shame you for taking vacation and if your project is delayed you will work Monday -Saturday 12 hr days with no OT pay. Construction is a tough industry especially being new but depending on who your leadership is you will have to teach yourself as there is little to no training. They expect you to know their systems and processes but lack the ability to teach and shame those who do actually speak up and ask questions. Through out the project I was on I found that I actually learned more from other new hires or those at the same level as myself than I did from senior leadership. The only problem with this is that eventually you will have to pull teeth and try to get information from leadership when you find yourself in important meetings with the engineer and architect. This company has the potential to create the excellent work environment they preach about but they need to really work on implementing a training program for new hires and listening to employee concerns. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians is accurate here.

Zero work life balance
Superintendent (Current Employee) - Baltimore, MD - February 22, 2024
You are expected to work 10-12 hour days every day. Too many politics in this company and if you Do not play into them you will be targeted. The only good thing about this company is the benefits. Pay is lower than other GCs They expect you to travel and do things for the company with nothing in return Upper management does not know how to bid jobs and you will travel. Unless you are an older white male who’s been with the company for over ten years you will not be treated with respect
Pros
Health insurance
Cons
Politics. Travel. Poor Management. Lack of training

Jobs at The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company
Co-workers were a pleasure to be around
Truck Driver (Former Employee) - Orlando, FL - December 3, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Poor Management. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. And absolutely no communication amongst management. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Everything always changing. Literally by the minute

No work life balance
Project Manager (Former Employee) - Greenbelt, MD - November 5, 2023
Simple - NO WORK LIFE BALANCE. WT produces unhappy marriages. Not for someone who is trying to start a family, or someone who prioritizes their family.
Pros
Stock Plan
Cons
Management, work hours, lacking diversity, no work life balance

Long hours , management sucks
Senior Field Engineer (Former Employee) - Roanoke, VA - September 24, 2023
There is little if any movement in management unless you directly cater to the egos of your superiors. WT will work you all hours of the day if they can without OT or additional compensation. There are some good low and mid level staff at WT, however most of management is extremely egotistical because they fed egos to get there and now feel like top dog. There is much consideration to ethnicity and gender when it comes to raises, promotions and opportunities. Multiple senior staff members have also been known to make inappropriate remarks about certain genders or ethnicities of subcontractors to the team.
Pros
Pension plan
Cons
Management, advancement, hours

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company insights
What people like
- Clear sense of purpose
- Supportive environment
- Ability to learn new things
Areas for improvement
- Time and location flexibility
Dynamic, fulfilling, stable
Recruiting Coordinator (Current Employee) - Towson, MD - August 2, 2023
Everyone says 'it's the people' that set us apart. That is legitimately the case at Whiting-Turner. The work can be challenging, but that is the industry. The teams that surround you become your family and support each other in everything they do. Construction is not filled with stuffy businesspeople that just show up to do their job and go home and neither is Whiting-Turner. Everyone here is easy to talk to, not to mention incredibly talented at their jobs.
Pros
The people, the benefits, and a unique industry.

That's were the stress come in play. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Good place to start and expand. Culture of the company Good and great to retire from. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Safety first. Meeting and talk about our work assessment sheet. How to do certain work in a safe manner.etc

Fun place to work has management issues
Assistant Superintendent (Former Employee) - Baltimore, MD - March 22, 2023
I actually enjoyed working for this company and they pay well along with benefits depending on what you’re doing. I will say they have favorable people and some field employees back bite or careless with how they treat others and depending on seniority you might end up without a job like me
Pros
Geared towards family business and great benefits
Cons
Poor management and diversity issues

Starts Good, Can Turn Bad in a Moment
Assistant Project Manager (Former Employee) - Princeton, NJ - March 17, 2023
Entry level salary was better than average. First 6-12 months, you can learn a lot. BUT, your growth is severely dependent on the project you are on and which leadership you are under. The company prides itself on "decentralization" but there are serious cons to this type of company organization. The employee is usually stuck in the team they assign him/her to on day one and it is difficult to transition to another one. The employees growth is directly linked to the opinion of his/her supervisor. There are some supervisors that believe in their employees but it is an old-boys club that sticks to the mantra "our way or the highway." They won't fire you, but they will talk about you behind your back and stunt your growth.
Pros
Good starting salary, full benefits package
Cons
Low raises, promotions only at end of year

2 stars
Field Project Accountant (Former Employee) - Bethlehem, PA - January 12, 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? The best part is working with a lot of different teams of people (this is not inclusive of upper management). What is the most stressful part about working at the company? The most stressful part of the job can be dealing with a multitude of personalities, from co-workers to contractors. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? The work environment/culture is extremely toxic. Unfortunately, the true culture does not fit within the company’s advertised framework and COE.

Find work else where.
Craftsman (Former Employee) - Austin, TX - December 29, 2022
Whiting-turner hits the ground running when it comes to drama and mind games. The management is lazy and laxed. Favoritism & colorism rules here and they WILL run you off or keep you down if you get out of line. The benefits are good. But the management is very lazy until something goes wrong.
Pros
Benefits
Cons
Short breaks, mind games, bad management

work hard and you'll be promoted quickly
PM (Former Employee) - Kansas City, MO - November 18, 2022
Landing the right projects is key. The people you end up working with is what makes the project a good one, the project is going to be successful, but getting to work with an intelligent and outstanding team makes all the difference

Good experience for entry level
Engineer (Former Employee) - Baltimore, MD - November 15, 2022
You get exposed you to projects right a way so you get a lot of experience. But, the cons are you do not give much time off and pay was not very high.

Big, Stable GC
Internship (Former Employee) - Washington, DC - November 10, 2022
Great place to gain experience in the industry, long hours are expected, pay is average at best, but benefits are excellent. PTO could be better initially. Work hard play hard mentality

Terrible work culture, could not leave at 5 and not feel guilty or get stared at. The benefits are great however.
Intern (Former Employee) - White Plains, NY - September 1, 2022
It was tough to gauge how the work culture was in the office, I am sure on the job site it would be different. As an intern I was very intimidated, and it did not feel so inclusive.

Long Hours and High Stress
Field Engineer (Former Employee) - Irvine, CA - July 29, 2022
Long hours and High stress are a normal part of the construction industry and working at WT does not change that. Depending on who your supervisor is, expect to put in a lot of time at your job. There is an expectation to put the job first above all else. If you are someone who enjoys working most of the time then this is a good environment. If not, then you may want to reconsider.
Pros
Learn a lot
Cons
Work a lot

If you want a life outside work don't work here.
Assistant Manager (Current Employee) - Maryland - July 21, 2022
NO work/life balance. Even if you have nothing to do, you're expected to sit in your jobsite trailer for 10 hours a day. PTO is awful, work holidays and weekends with no compensation. Have to be willing to relocate for a project. Not good with training either - they just throw you into a project and expect you to know everything.
Cons
No work life balance, pays less than other GCs

Good place to work
Field Engineer (Current Employee) - Herndon, VA - March 23, 2022
I enjoy working at Whiting-Turner. Everyone is really nice and help you succeed. The only bad thing about it is that you work long hours. Benefits are good, better than other companies

Good company and good management
Field Engineer (Former Employee) - Orlando, FL - March 6, 2022
WT was a good company to work for as a new graduate. Management was supportive. Work like balance was iffy but work life balance is challenging with any construction company. I feel WT has a better balance than other companies. Definitely room to grow within the company.
Pros
Good management
Cons
Work life balance

Fast Pace - Learn as you go environment
Project Manager (Former Employee) - USA - February 23, 2022
You will need to be a quick learner as learning is done through experiences not necessarily teaching. Fast pace environment, a lot of young employees fresh out of college

Fun Workplace
Field Engineer (Current Employee) - Herndon, VA - February 20, 2022
You spend most of your time outside talking to subcontractors. If you can’t understand something they are your to go people cause they do that for a living. Lots of room to grow within the company if you are willing and open to learn
