I grew up in Sylmar. The streets and sidewalks are littered with garbage and furniture. In a 10-minute walk to school, I see homeless people sleeping and roaming the sidewalks (worse before COVID-19), sometimes asking students for money, me included. The air quality is pretty bad. Almost every day it's either the smell of gasoline, cigarette smoke, weed, or all of the above. Usually at night, you can hear car alarms go off, as well as fireworks, although I can't tell if they are gunshots.
If you don't mind any of that, the people are pretty cool. The community is as social as you want it to be. You could go out and converse with people or stay within the safety of your home. The high school offers pretty good resources for the students, but many of the kids don't take advantage of the resources available to them so it's easy to take advantage. Everything you need is within a 10-minute walk, i.e., fast food, grocery stores, etc.
That's my experience. It's what I call home.

Sylmar is a conveniently located & diverse town. I like that there are many shops & restaurants to cater to people's needs. Common activities that take place here are hiking & horseback riding since its near the mountain. Commuting to work is rather convenient considering the 210 & 5 freeways border the city. In the recent years there have been more developers building apartments. This presents issues with the city being more congested whereas it was more quiet & calm in previous years. Residents who own horses are also finding issues with their properties. Due to there being more new builds the city of LA is doubling down on property code inspections. This presents a problem because many of the properties in the area were & are still promoted as horse properties, however many do not measure the minimum of 19,000 square feet. Many properties are just under that amount. Now people who purchased properties to keep their horses at home are having to relocate, causing a financial burden.
Overall, Sylmar is a family friendly neighborhood and its popular for the the amount if diverse restaurants its home to. Ranging from food stands to dine in restaurants. It is a safe city, full of homes with large properties as well as apartment and condominium complexes.
