APPLETON - An Appleton man has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide in an overdose death.

Steven M. Mattfield

Steven Mattfield, 30, appeared in Outagamie County Circuit Court on Friday. He is accused of providing methadone to Jason Canaday, 33, said Outagamie County Assistant District Attorney Peter Hahn. Canaday was found dead on Oct. 31 after overdosing on methadone.

The felony charge carries a maximum prison term of 40 years and up to $100,000 in fines.

Citing Mattfield's prior record — which includes retail theft, bail jumping and operating a vehicle after his driver's license was revoked — and the charge Mattfield is facing, Court Commissioner Brian Figy set bail at $50,000.

"Under the circumstances, I believe the defendant is a danger to the public and a flight risk," Figy said.

A preliminary hearing will be scheduled.
