"Me and "Combat" Carl were in line to use the phones in Kuwait and we shared a conversation that stays with me to this day. It went into details that were personal to me and him both. The point of that small conversation was that no matter what happened we both missed and loved our wifes unconditionally. Later on through out those months I would see "Combat" Carl in the FOBS while I would perform inspections and we would shoot a few words to one another. The last time I saw him was the day before. We left smiles on each others faces that day, although I cant remember what we spoke about exactly. But I do to this day remember the conversations we had about our love for our wifes."

Richard was always my go to guy to get any mission accomplished and in his usual fashion of 100 mph. SGT Carl, then PVT Carl always spoke highly of his family, and his work values showed the fine upbringing this young man had. Richard e-mailed me from Korea, and wanted my help to get him into the 571st Med, to which I made some phone calls, and was able to get Richard to the unit he wanted. As a Dustoff soldier myself, I know the reason Richard wanted to be in a Medevac Unit. He wanted to help people. As a retired US Army First Sergeant, I will remember SGT Richard Carl as one of the best soldiers that I have ever had the pleasure to serve with, and I know without a doubt, he is up in heaven doing what god asks at his usual 100 mph speed. My prayers are with his wife, two children, mother and father and the rest of his family and friends. I know that the Army has lost a truly remarkable soldier, and heaven has gained a true Guardian Angel."
