UPDATE (2:23 p.m.):

All lanes of Route 340 are open again, according to VDOT, after the southbound lanes were closed in the 1500 block of Eastside Highway near Crimora due to a fatal collision between a propane truck and a car.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash. More details are below.

_____

A fatal accident between a tanker truck and a car has closed all southbound lanes of Route 340 near Crimora.

According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, the crash occurred around 10:53 a.m. Thursday morning in the 1500 block of Eastside Highway (Route 340).

Tropper M.C. Brill responded to the scene.

According to State Police, a 2001 Toyota Corolla was traveling north on Eastside Highway when it crossed the centerline and struck head-on a southbound tanker truck. The impact of the crash caused the tanker truck to overturn onto its side.

The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. State Police are still in the process of notifying next-of-kin, so identifying information will not be released until after that process.

The driver of the tanker truck, a 57-year-old Churchville man, was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt.

The tanker truck was partially loaded with propane, which has to be unloaded before the truck can be cleared from the scene. This will take some time and continue to cause lane closures on 340.

This is near the intersection with Forgotten Lane.

The tanker was not damaged in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

WHSV has received images from the scene and made the discretionary decision not to display any images of the Toyota due to the sensitive nature of the scene.
