Rewards for Justice Program

The Rewards for Justice Program, administered by the U.S. Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service, is one of the most valuable U.S. Government assets in the fight against international terrorism.  Under this program, the Secretary of State may offer rewards for information that prevents, frustrates, or favorably resolves acts of international terrorism against U.S. persons or property worldwide, including by dismantling an organization in whole or significant part.  Rewards also may be paid for information leading to the arrest or conviction in any country of any individual attempting, committing, conspiring to commit, or aiding and abetting in the commission of such acts or to the identification or location of an individual who holds a key leadership position in a terrorist organization.

In the past eight years, the United States has paid over $9.5 million to people who have provided credible information that put terrorists behind bars or prevented acts of international terrorism worldwide.

Since September 11, 2001, the Rewards for Justice Program has:

  • Received more than 32,000 tips and other information.  Passed investigative leads to various local law enforcement and Federal agencies, such as the FBI, CIA, ATF, and the Department of the Treasury, and U.S. embassies overseas.
  • Offered rewards of up to $25 million for information leading to the capture of Usama bin Laden and other key Al-Qaeda leaders, and the prevention of terrorist attacks against the United States;
  • Released numerous public service announcements in several languages (English, Spanish, Arabic) throughout the country seeking information on possible international terrorist attacks against the United States;
  • Issued Usama bin Laden matchbooks for domestic publicity campaign;
  • Redesigned the Rewards for Justice website (www.rewardsforjustice.net);
  • Created a toll-free tip line for the continental United States, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, and Puerto Rico (1-800-USREWARDS);
  • Received over 7.3 million hits to the Rewards for Justice website.
