Low Pay / Great Staff

Indeed Featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
The staff is great. Plainfield does not outplace students who need to be in private, therapeutic settings. It leaves staff members overwhelmed. The administration tends not to support the paraprofessionals and the teachers. The pay is very low. Nearby districts pay much more. The kids make the job worth it.

Great coworkers

Overall it was a good experience in the field of nursing. I enjoyed my time there and the opportunity to learn new things. The health services team is great when asking for help.

Good discipline for student and support forvteachers

Students were disciplined as needed, and within parameters outlined by state legislation. Teachers would feel supported in regards to student discipline, academics, and overall workplace environment.

Minimal support

Felt like adequate support and guidance was not given when needed. Big work load and low pay compared to other districts. Good student culture through

If you need a job it's a good start.

What is the best part of working at the company?Having weekends off as well as holidays with the kids and breaks. Time accrued is also a nice benefit. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? No communication or accountability. What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Meh, there are better places. It can be toxic as nepotism is HUGE here and the district as a whole plays favorites. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Usually stressful due to the way we are treated. Nobody had accountability for tasks being completed properly or teachers having boundaries while staying late. Coverage was insane when I was there and you'd be asked to stay late right before the end of your shift and "yes" was a stressed response.

Good Job

It was a regular, stable, flexible job. The co-workers were wonderful people. The administrators were supportive and helpful. They care about students. I enjoyed working at the school because of the people there.

Great place to work

Flexible schedule, good compensation. Other teachers were very respectful and helpful. Students were generally nice. Most of the time there were other teachers in class to help.

Rewarding

It is rewarding to work with children and youth. When the school's team of lunchroom /recess supervisors has a goal of positive teamwork and care for the students , as well as making improvements in the way things are run , it is wonderful! Elementary schools have both recess and lunch , so be prepared to go outside in all types of temperatures, with the exception of extreme lows or highs. Must feel confident managing children's activities and behavior inside the classroom for days of indoor recess. Kindness is excellent as well ! Consistency and structure , safety, observant, helping a student to redirect their behavior and kindness and understanding are a plus in this field.

The hardest part of the job is when coworkers don't fully understand special needs children and how precious they are.

Pretty happy there, just would like salary increases during this time and more stipends. Most coworkers are great and others are just plain miserable or rude.

Couldn't deal with the salary

I really enjoyed my time at the school in the district. I learned a lot from wise peers, trends and wonderful students. I had supportive administrators who cared about the students and the teachers. Time away from family doing the work of two jobs, yet not being able to support my family or have time for another job forced me out. Teachers need to be able to live off of their salaries, they really do put in a tremendous amount of work for it, that's for sure! During remote learning, everything took twice as long to do, parents seemed to blame teachers for remote learning and failed to see that we, too are working parents whose children were going through the wringer sometimes, too. Teacher mental health status took a huge hit; even the best teachers were planning what their letters of resignation would say, but still...the lack of pay...so disrespectful!

Mostly pros but the cons are bigger

If you can live at a poverty level salary then this job is for you. Sadly the district doesn't value the position enough like other surrounding districts as far as compensation. The overall work is very rewarding although the ones in more difficult classrooms should be paid more. Every teacher I worked for supported my efforts and we worked well together. There does seem to be a certain hierarchy among the staff at schools. It can be a decent gig for fulfilling time while staying on your young children's schedule.

Pros

Rewarding work

Cons

Pay

Teachers are underpaid and unappreciated

Despite the plainfield moms controlling the board of education with their unreasonable demands. The employment here is exhausting- no support from the district- we are the worst paying district yet are prized as being one of the largest in Illinois. I have been a teacher for six years here and it is exhausting

Pros

Laptops

Cons

Wages- treatment- communication from district

Compensation is a joke!

The people and culture are great! However, the pay is is well below cost of living. You'll make more working at a fast food restaurant! The union does not have your back!!!

Left on your own to sink or swim.

Being a nurse in this district was very difficult dealing with covid. It used to be a wonderful job, but you got no support from the higher ups. The union doesn't help and administration puts unrealistic expectations on you. You are left to do the job of multiple people.

Pros

Working with kids

Cons

People at the district office and your union not supporting you at all.

None

Can be a fantastic job with the right supervisor and custodial team working together. Hiring seems a bit unorganized but clears up after your employment begins.

Easy going

While working as a substitute custodian I learned a lot about how the school district works. I have learned a lot of different things about how cleaning the schools in the summer works. It was very easy going, on a day to day basis I had to clean the desks, walls, white boards, and carpets. The most enjoyable part of the job is cleaning the carpets using a machine that is similar to a giant buffer and an extractor.

Paraprofessional

I worked as a paraprofessional for PSD 202 and I loved working at Plainfield Academy. The administrative staff were awesome and supportive. The teachers and support staff are like family and the school climate is awesome. The job was challenging and rewarding. I learned a lot by working at Plainfield Academy. The drawback is the pay, I don't think anyone does if for the money.

Limited pay, no benefits, and no support or training to improve skills.

The Substitute Coordinator notifies us too late some time to accept the Substitute Assignment. Management has very little commitment to the Substitute Teachers. Initially the district had us come into the district office to attend a group orientation my first year and complete new hire paperwork. Since that time, I have been offered no training, no invitation to Teacher Orientation, no supervision, and little or no communication about the schools activities, work related meetings, observations, or management interaction about my performance. There is no technology updates to help us use the school's computer systems, and the district does not provided a laptop to substitute teachers to communicate with other teachers about their classroom assignment, student behavior, management decisions, completing attendance online as the teachers do, or even any daily update as to what is happening on each campus that day. In general, Substitute Teachers are not treated like part of the education team, but just as a necessary inconvenience that is given a hardy, Thanks! We only have a half hour to eat our lunch, which means taking a break is impossible. Also substitute secretaries also try and fill our schedule each day with multiple teachers classes that even exceeds regular teachers 5 class expectation. In short, I believe the School District has taken the Substitute Teachers for granted. If they would treat the Substitute Teachers with the same respect as the regular teacher, provide supervision, yearly performance evaluations, and training, it would probably be a pretty good -

Pros

Well maintained school buildings.

Cons

Low pay, no free lunches, no awards for performance, no yearly evaluations.

Great People and Great Work Environment

Do your work and you'll be fine, not too much but if kids get out of hand and make a mess it can be frustrating. People are fun to work with and management is great, staff at the schools are very nice and appreciative as well.
