Sergeant John Shine responded to a call of a gunman terrorizing a neighborhood. The gunman killed one woman, wounded two men and ran through the streets brandishing a pistol. The offender then barricaded himself in his apartment at 1261 West 61st Street. Sergeant Shine went to the apartment and demanded entry. The gunman fired through the door, striking the sergeant. Sergeant Shine died in the hospital two hours later.
The suspect was executed in 1906.
Sergeant Shine served with the Chicago Police Department for less than 16 and a half years and was survived by his wife and daughter.
