Harris County Precinct Two Commissioner Sylvia R. Garcia was joined by Precinct 2 seniors and community leaders at her Annual Hispanic Heritage event.
This year’s celebration took place on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the North East Harris County Community Center in the Aldine area.

The event, which began in 2003, has grown each year thanks in part to the sponsorship of J.P. Morgan Chase which has been its underwriter since 2008. The entertainment was courtesy of MECA’s Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico groups.
“This is one of my favorite events of the year because today we celebrate our rich heritage and cultural diversity,” Garcia said. “Harris County benefits when residents of all national backgrounds are celebrated and embraced,” she added.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Caroline Castillo-Crimm, from Sam Houston State University, who delighted attendees with remarks on Mexico’s War of Independence from Spain. This year Mexico celebrates 200 years of independence.
In attendance were Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia, County Clerk Lauren Jackson, State Representatives Ana Hernandez and Armando Walle; Judge Armando Rodriguez. And Interim Consul of Mexico Norberto Saul Terrazas.
