Michael Haywood has been hired as the Texas Southern football team's new head coach, a university source confirmed Thursday.

The hire comes following former coach Darrell Asberry's resignation on Nov. 30 after four years at the helm. TSU went 3-7 overall this season.

Haywood was once thought of as an up-and-coming coach when Pittsburgh hired him away from Miami (Ohio) in 2010. However, he never coached a game at Pitt, because he was fired three weeks after the hiring when he was charged with domestic battery with a child present. The charges were eventually dropped, but Haywood hasn't coached since.

At Miami (Ohio), Haywood went 8-4 and won the Mid-American Conference title in his second season.
