A 28-year-old man was charged Friday in the shooting death of another man at an Olathe bar.

Michael Wayne Chinn Jr., of Augusta, Kan., was charged in Johnson County District Court with intentional second-degree murder in the Wednesday night killing of William Schutkesting.

Chinn was also charged with aggravated assault and discharging a firearm at an occupied building.

Schutkesting, 38, of Olathe, who was known as Billy, was fatally shot at the Double Nickel Bar & Grill at 189 S. Rogers Road. The bar is just east of Interstate 35 at Santa Fe Street.

Olathe police said officers using a police dog found Chinn nearby and arrested him.

Police have not said what instigated the shooting, which was Olathe’s first homicide of 2016.

The bar posted on its Facebook page that Schutkesting was a friend to many of its staff and customers and said he was trying to help with a “situation” when he was shot.

“We are a family-oriented restaurant,” the post said. “This kind of thing just doesn’t happen here. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and our staff.”

A judge set Chinn’s bond at $1 million. He made his initial court appearance Friday afternoon and requested a court-appointed lawyer.
