Notorious IP Plaintiff ArrivalStar Back On The Hunt

Law360, Boston (March 5, 2015, 7:33 PM EST) -- After a long hiatus following a blitz of patent infringement suits and a battle with public transit agencies in 2013, ArrivalStar SA has suddenly fired off more than a dozen suits against retailers over the past few months, suggesting high-profile attacks on its tactics haven't tamed 2013's most litigious patent plaintiff.

ArrivalStar, with its partner Melvino Technologies Ltd., came out on top of Law360's list of the most active patent plaintiffs in 2013, filing 137 suits against a diverse group of defendants. Melvino Technologies owns a group of patents related to vehicle tracking technology exclusively licensed to Luxembourg-based ArrivalStar, and together the two have long waged an aggressive patent assertion campaign against logistics companies, retailers and others that produce or use technology to track vehicles or shipments.

ArrivalStar's suits in 2013 over its vehicle tracking patents continued through early December of that year, but then stopped completely. Law360's look at the most active patent plaintiffs of 2014 contained no hint of ArrivalStar.  But over the past few months, ArrivalStar has begun to file lawsuits again in the Southern District of Florida, racking up 15 suits against defendants including Urban Outfitters Inc. and L'Oreal USA Inc., and potentially signaling the start of a new wave of intellectual property lawsuits from the pair.
