Welcome to the Veggie Works Vegetarian Restaurant's vegan Cookbook! "Veggie Works" is a popular vegetarian restaurant located in the New Jersey shore town of Belmar. Ever since we opened in 1994, Veggie Works has received so much local and national acclaim for its unique cuisine, we've decided to share it with you.
All the recipes in this book have been prepared and served to happy customers at our restaurant and are designed to work. The methods and processes described have been perfected through thousands of man-hours of work and can be relied upon.
Every meal from breakfast through dinner is covered, as well as snacks, appetizers and desserts. You'll learn how to prepare delicious and nutritious food from the raw ingredients that you have assembled. Your kitchen will become your workshop and you... the master artist. You'll impress family and friends with your wholesome cooking, as well as yourself.
Every recipe in this book contains easy to find natural ingredients that are low in fat, cholesterol free, and entirely vegan. You will learn how to use high protein vegetable meat analogs and concentrated vegetable flavorings to create meals packed with nutrition. Even the most reluctant cynics will easily succumb to the satisfying meals that you prepare.
There are sections on stocking your pantry, necessary equipment and grocery shopping. If a recipe requires the use of another prerequisite recipe, that ingredient will be highlighted in Italicized Bold type. Use the Table of Contents or Index to find these prerequisite recipes. If you're not sure what an ingredient is, try looking it up in the Glossary chapter. The Resource Directory includes contact information for the purchase of most ingredients. In addition, the Measurement Conversion Table is included as a handy reference. And any of these measurements can be converted to metric values with the aid of a Metric to Standard Table.
The use of this cookbook is easily mastered. First, decide what you want to cook. This can be done through the Table of Contents, Index, Meal Planner & Themes chapter, or, random browsing of the book's contents! All recipes are listed alphabetically in their respective chapters. So it's up to you, start at the beginning and read through the chapters, or go right to a recipe and start cooking. Every effort was expended in making your use of the Vegan Cookbook as efficient as possible.

Ok, now that THAT is out of the way... this cookbook is awesome and the restaurant which it came form is awesome... although the restaurant just closed for renovation and reopened about a week ago (late Feb 2005) with a new look and under a new name, "Kara's Kitchen". The menu items are still the same and they still rock. Many of my Omnivore co-workers are completely hooked on the Whoopie wrap and the Philly sandwiches.
About the recipes: The portions are big, but when it comes right down to it, if it was good when you made it why wouldn't you want left overs? The restaurant uses a specific brand of Soy cheese (VeganRella), and if you ever ate there and ordered something with the soy cheese in it, you would swear they duped you with real cheese - it's THAT good. The final products of most of the recipes are supposed to seem traditional and hearty - like home made. So, do not expect recipes to turn out light and small like as if you went to a fancy cafe. The calzone comes out tasting a little vinegar-ish, as if the vegetables have been marinated in a light Italian dressing before hand. While not what you might expect, it is delicious. My favorite hearty meal is the Paul Bunyon. Add some mashed potatoes or stuffing to this and your set for a good winter time meal that's packed with protein and stick to your ribs, especially after shoveling snow.
I hope this review helped. Veggie Works (now Kara's Kitchen) ROCKS and their recipes are of a style all their own. I thank Chef Mark for producing this book because it not only has great recipes... it gives you Great ideas for new recipes and once you get the recipes down pat, you can experiment with the ingredients and create some of your own variations.
