The VIN and engine number are not the same. You will only see an engineering number on the engine itself which will not match the VIN number. The frame will have a stamp on it but as far as the engine goes it does not.
Customer:
So there is no way to tell if the engine is the original one or not?

You could check the block code to see what the build date was, but cannot check the engine to find the same vin code or anything to that extent.

my daughter has my mothers lincoln and my husband paid 2,000 toput a used engine in the car, shehas had other problems with the car and has had 3 other mechanics tell her

that the engin is the original one and it hasn't been changed. We needed some way to prove that, is there a way?

Used engines will have markings on it with some form of permanent marker. You can look for the casting numbers on the block or head but the issue is if the engine was from a similar year of engine this will prove nothing. Almost all wrecking yards will have markings on it and is easily seen. If the engine was used it may look like the original engine. Also with a used engine may have issues with and sometimes it is just bad luck with them not lasting long.

I have installed used engines that have only lasted a couple hundred miles and some that have lasted hundreds of thousands of miles.
