Kathy Zaferatos of Zaferatos and Associates in Beckley stands in her office Thursday. Gov. Joe Manchin appointed her to the West Virginia Real Estate Commission, about which she said, “it is an honor and a privilege and I look forward to seeing how we can make improvements.”

Kathy Zaferatos, of Zaferatos and Associates in downtown Beckley, is happy to accept her appointment to the West Virginia Real Estate Commission by Gov. Joe Manchin. Zaferatos has been in real estate for 18 years and has been a broker since 1996.

Zaferatos explained that the commission’s purpose “is to protect the public as well as represent real estate agents. For instance, if a member of the public files a formal complaint against a Realtor, the committee descides if it is a legitimate one and, if so, what course of action should be taken.”

The Real Estate Commission might decide to penalize the agent or even revoke their license, she said. The commission also handles complaints between agents and monitors Realtor education and training.

Zaferatos commented that she “had no idea” that she would be appointed, but that “it is an honor and a privilege and I look forward to seeing how we can make improvements.”

She pointed out that she is excited about serving at this particular junction because the commission, composed of a director and five commissioners, will now have an interesting and new dynamic with three women on board out of the six. The last appointment, she noted, only had one.

“We three ladies that have been selected have made contact with each other, and we are all committed and ready to make a difference,”  Zaferatos said.

Zaferatos also mentioned that her husband served as a commissioner. He was appointed in 2002 and served until July 2010. Though she is not replacing her husband on the board, “we are the first husband and wife team to serve.”

As a new member of the Real Estate Commission, she will begin her term during the first monthly meeting on Oct. 7 and will serve, unless reappointed, until June 2013.
