John emigrated from Scotland in 1774. He married twice, both times at the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Shawangunk. He married first wife, Ida Hoffman, on January 29, 1778. They had six children.

John and his second wife, Sarah Terwilliger, were married December 22, 1789 and they had 12 children together.

John was a private in the Revolutionary War. He also served as a deacon in his church, The Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Shawangunk. A life-long farmer, John inherited his farm from his first wife, Ida Hoffman.
