I cannot tell you how disappointed I was with this book. It was intended to be a gift, but is so poorly published, I lost all interest in gifting it.
The information itself, while sometimes inconsistently delivered (and with a clear Ludwig bias, particularly for the Black Beauty), is (of course) fantastic and there is no question that John Aldridge and others who contributed to the book know their "stuff." The images are all in black/white, even though known and recognized color images were readily available at the time the book was originally published. The publishing quality is extremely poor, with poor printing that sometimes appears blotchy and at other times just inconsistently printed--although the glossy cover is stunning in design and full color (that's one reason I was so shocked; when I first unboxed the book and saw the cover, I thought, "Oh boy! This is beautiful..." and then, reality smacked me in the face.
What a terrible disappointment, even though (as I said above), the information is wonderful. The book needs some really good editing and a wholesale graphics redesign, utilizing the very best images that can be obtained. It would be worth $50-and maybe even $62.50 or $75--if this was done, but in the meantime, I'm moving to another gift. I can only hope a redesigned effort and reprinting can soon be done.
One more point: There are several known and recognized experts on various brands that might have been interviewed to give a more consistent presentation.

Great reference book. Invaluable to drum collectors and restorers. Author actually engraves drums for Ludwig. He is who anyone goes to to get thier drums engraved, and he is a true artist. Also has collected some great info here, worth a spot on any drummers bookshelf.

This is the second one of these that I have purchased. I gave the first one to a former student and then purchased another one for my reference. Great book and seemingly very complete.

Poor black and white pictures was something I could ignore but the book was poorly written and it seems like John knows his vintage drums but no idea how to write a book. Really not worth it. Buy anything by Rob Cook.

Written information is OK. Photos/diagrams are B&W, some of horrible quality. The only color photo is the cover. Already got rid of it.

What is it with the people who are writing these drum books.
Yet again this book has a lack of colour photo's, actually it has none at all.
Yes, the written information about the drums is all there, but to reference these old items you need quality colour photo's, at the very worst extremely fine quality B&W photo's. This book has neither.
To see an example of what I expect from a quality "drum reference book" take a look at "The Drum Book" by Geoff Nicholls.

vintage drums...vintage book.
