Biography

James Roughley was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

James Roughley was born about 3 Apr 1789 in England, the son of Joseph Roughley and Elizabeth Hunter.

James and his father, Joseph, were tried at Lancaster in 1817, for stealing cloth and were both sentenced for a term of seven years. Both were transported to New South Wales, leaving England aboard the convict ship "Tottenham" in January 1818 and arriving at Sydney Cove on 14 October, 1818[1].

He married Harriet Kentwell in 1825 in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia[2]. James and Harriet had 5 children between 1827 and 1836. Charlotte 1827, James 1829, Joseph 1832, Elizabeth 1834 and Eleanor 1836. It appears that his father was also living with him and his family, according to the 1828 Census 1828[3].

James died on 20 July 1838 in New South Wales, Australia. The Death Certificate has him aged 80 years, but this is obviously a Typo as if his Birth Date is correct, he would have been aged about 50 years at his death, and when his father died 3 years later, he was recorded as being aged 79 years[4].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
