James L. Benson was born about 1839-40, the son of James & Edith Benson, of Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His occupation was that of coach smith.
James married Sarah A. Haag about 1860/61. The 1900 federal census shows that Sarah was the mother of 3 children with 1 living at the time of the census, that child being daughter Mary, wife of John Harry Robinson.
A Civil War Veteran, James was a captain in Co. A of the 79th Pa Infantry.
James died July 18, 1872 and is buried in Wood Hill Cemetery in the city of Lancaster, FAG Memorial 37896065. There is a military headstone standing and a private headstone that is off its base and lying flat on the ground.
