Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD, founder and Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab, presented his talk, "Transportation in a World that is Gray, Delayed, Small, and Female."
About the Speaker
Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD, is founder and Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. Based in MIT’s Center for Transportation & Logistics, he teaches in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the Sloan School's Advanced Management Program.
Coughlin conducts research, speaks and advises on the impact of global demographic change and technology trends on consumer behavior, business innovation and public policy. He writes for Forbes and MarketWatch and produces the blog Disruptive Demographics. He was named by The Wall Street Journal as one of “12 pioneers inventing the future of retirement,” and by Fast Company Magazine as one of the “100 Most Creative People in Business.”
Coughlin has served on advisory boards for Daimler, Nissan and led the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Task Force on Older Adults and New Transportation Technology. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of AARP.
With MIT colleague Lisa D’Ambrosio, PhD, he produced Aging America and Transportation: Personal Choices and Public Policy (Springer, 2012) and recently completed his new book, The Longevity Economy: Inside the World's Fastest Growing, Most Misunderstood Market (Public Affairs Press, 2017).
Prior to joining MIT, Coughlin led EG&G’s Transportation Research and Logistics group supporting the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and several other federal agencies.
