Frankfort Public Works Employees To Unionize

If approved, the workers will join International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150.

FRANKFORT, IL — More than 30 employees of the Frankfort Public Works Department are joining the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150. A petition to represent the workers was filed with the Illinois State Labor Relations Board, the organization announced Wednesday.

The next step is for the petition to be certified. Once that happens, the union then will begin negotiating the first contract for employees.

“We are proud to welcome these workers to Local 150,” James M. Sweeney, the president-business manager for Local 150, said in a statement. “Frankfort is one of the few remaining municipalities in the area whose public works employees were not represented by a union, and we are eager to negotiate an agreement that benefits the workers and provides outstanding service to the residents and taxpayers in Frankfort.”
