Berhampur: Twenty-four workers were rescued by police from an illegal brick kiln at Banipalli in Ganjam district on Saturday.
The owner was arrested and the district administration demolished the kiln.
“The owner, Bali Nayak of Sana Kodanda near Bhanjanagar, was arrested for allegedly assaulting some labourers after they stopped work protesting against his refusal to allow them to go to their villages for the New Year. One of the workers sustained fractures in his hand,” said Biswamitra Harpal, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Bhanjanagar.
Sources said the kiln owner had engaged the workers from Patnagarh for the past three months. Harpal said the workers were sent back to their villages near Patnagarh in Balangir district with the help of labour department officials. “We registered a case against Nayak after the workers lodged a complaint on Thursday,” said Bana Bihari Pradhan, inspector in-charge, Belaguntha police station.
