About me

Welcome to my Web page. I hope the information included in it will help you learn some more about my background and about my philosophy of medical practice. Kaiser Permanente offers excellent online tools, which will help you learn more about your own health and which will also save you time and effort.

Biography

I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After finishing high school there, I moved to Connecticut and completed college and medical school at Yale University. My first visit to San Diego in 1984 made me fall in love with the beauty of the city and the wonderful weather, so I decided to complete my internal medicine specialty training at UC San Diego. I have practiced internal medicine since 1988 and joined Kaiser Permanente in October 2006.

About my practice

My philosophy about member care, particularly for chronic illnesses such as diabetes, is to educate the member upfront as much as possible about the problem and about the treatment strategy. Once we have agreed on a plan, I try to very clearly set out dates and targets so that we can evaluate progress together and insure that we are optimizing the health status of each member. We all lead very busy lives, and in this rush it is often one's health that takes a back seat to other responsibilities. I feel it is my duty to guide members along their health care path, and that guidance sometimes requires gentle (or firm) reminders about the follow through on the treatment plan. In that sense I consider myself to be a physician who "works by the book." My goal is to help you optimize your health and I encourage you to take an active role in working with me to do that.

How I thrive

Medicine is a profession that is tremendously rewarding, since physicians are given the privilege and the opportunity to work closely with members to improve their health. It's also mentally and emotionally stressful. I try to get to the gym most days of the week to try to help myself stay healthy. I love to travel, read up on current events and fiction, enjoy theater and modern art, and partake in the excellent food and wine in San Diego.
