Gordon Powell, LCSW

Education & Training

I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and psychoanalyst in private practice in Manhattan.  I have been in practice since 1989 and have written papers and presented at various psychoanalytic venues.

After receiving my Master's Degree from the Hunter College School of Social Work, I was trained as a psychoanalyst at Training and Research in Intersubjective Self Psychology (TRISP). 

I supervise psychotherapists and psychoanalysts, and I teach at three psychoanalytic institutes in New York City.

I have maintained a mindfulness meditation practice for many years.

My B.A. in English Literature is from Rutgers University.

How I Work

I want to help you lead the life you want. 

A full life requires feeling and accepting the full range of emotions, from euphoria to grief, without getting stuck. But when we shut ourselves off from one feeling, it shuts down others, and we cannot live fully.

I strive to help people live resilient, joyful, and rich lives by helping them access, accept, and embrace all feelings and states of mind. I work hard to create a non-judgmental relationship in which everyone feels fully accepted with empathy, wisdom, and humor.

I work with all individual adults. I have extensive experience with people who identify as LGBTQ+; adults with bipolar disorder and depression; adults dealing with substance-use problems; and adults with eating disorders.

Publications

I am very proud to announce the publication of my chapter “Sexuality and Intersubjective Self Psychology: What Matters” in Intersubjective Self Psychology: A Primer (Routledge: London & NY, 2019).

Professional Affiliations

I teach and serve on the Executive Committee at the Psychotherapy Center for Gender and Sexuality (PCGS), at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy (ICP), in New York. 

In addition, I am a teacher, supervisor, and training analyst at ICP and at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center (PPSC) in Manhattan. 

I teach and serve on the Executive Committee at TRISP (Training and Research in Intersubjective Self Psychology).
