- 2.0Child Protective InvestigatorFormer Employee, more than 8 yearsWest Palm Beach, FL
Pros
Work from home/hoteling. Ever changing and unpredictable work schedule including 75% of time being in field conducting risk assessment. Excellent Benefits. Hands-off supervision. Trust of community and exposure to many different educational opportunities. Received extra pay for 2+ years on weekend unit and 2+ years investigating child death on the Rapid Response/Special Victims Unit. Domestic Violence Specialist. SAMH specialist.
Cons
Unpredictable hours. Expected to work on days off and often more than 10+ hours per day. Unrealistic expectation of volumes of typed notes to be inputted immediately. Inaccurate information provided at intake and from supervisors. Risk of physical harm of self while in the field. Every intake was likely going to involve contentious and sensitive topics, persuasion, conflict resolution as well as conflict de-escalation. Emergency situations would often arise that would require immediate responses from myself and would often involve supervision direct above to 4 levels above me. Constant traveling in personal vehicle which caused wear and tear. Inconsistent direction from supervision. Constant changes in Operational Directives as well as yearly changes in state law. Court hearings that, although important, were often procedural and I was required to attend. A general attitude of importance of meeting deadlines as opposed to focusing on child safety and well being. Having to remove children, sometimes in a rushed and hurried manor, leading to confusion and fear for the child. Paperwork requirements were extensive and became, at times, overwhelming. Support staff cut backs that slowly increased workload to a level that made this 40-50 per hour week into a 60-70 per hour week.
