Manchester United celebrate scoring against Liverpool

Manchester United kept their trophy hopes alive for this season and ended Liverpool's quest for four trophies with a dramatic extra-time victory in an FA Cup quarter-final classic at Old Trafford.

In an incident-packed encounter, it was substitute Amad Diallo who sent Erik ten Hag's side to Wembley with a strike in the dying seconds of the additional period to send the Stretford End wild, the match-winner then being sent off after getting a second yellow card for his celebrations.

It summed up everything about this thriller, United manager Ten Hag doing a dance of delight as Diallo's shot flashed past Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

  4. 'We believed in our style and took our chances'

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "When it's Manchester Untied against Liverpool, it's one of the world's best football matches. It is historical. I thought first 35 minutes were the best I have seen from my team this season. We dropped off the level after that. You could see Liverpool were a very good team. We believed in our style and took our chances.

"Rashford had his moments, I thought he was very good. Today he misses but he is always there which is good. It inspired the rest of the team to keep going. He gave the example to keep going and believe.

"The team showed resilience and determination to win this game. We've had so many set backs. We are very strong mentally. We energised the fans, they got behind us and we won.

"We know he is capable of key moments by scoring goals and final passes.

"it doesn't matter who is the opponent. You have to play your best. Yesterday we saw Coventry are a very strong side. They played fantastic football and we have to play our best if we want to be in the final.

"We are still fighting. For a long time in the season, we are far behind that level but we are putting pressure on Spurs and Villa. Every game is a final and we lost one final against Fulham. Our goal is the Champions League and silverware."

  5. 'They took risks and I respect that'

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    Liverpool

    Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to ITV: "We did not have a good start but we adapted really well and played a top game. At 2-1 up we had so many chances to kill the game off, we were in a rush in some moments and the rest is already history. We were nearly there in extra time and in the end we lose the game. I cannot ask the boys for more.

"We had an intense season so far, you just have to count the games and today was hard. United took a lot of risks, I absolutely respect that.

"The decision making doesn't get better the longer the game goes on. Congratulations to United for going to the semi-final."

  7. Post-match stats

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    • Manchester United have eliminated Liverpool from the FA Cup for the 11th time; only Liverpool have eliminated a single opponent more times in the competition proper (12 v Everton).
    • Amad Diallo scored the latest winning goal in any match in the FA Cup proper (120:07) since West Ham v Kidderminster Harriers in February 2022 (120:48), and latest against Liverpool in the competition since February 2016 (West Ham, 120:30).
    • Mo Salah has scored 13 goals in 14 appearances against Manchester United for Liverpool, including eight in his last five at Old Trafford. Indeed, no player has scored more goals against a current Premier League club since Salah joined the Reds than this (Harry Kane also 13 v Everton).
    • This was the first time Liverpool lost a match in any competition this season in which they had been ahead.
  8. 'We have a team that is for the future'

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to ITV: "To go to the final we have to win against Coventry, we will have to play at our best. We saw that Coventry have great spirit, a great mentality. We will prepare our best to play in the final.

"The first 30 minutes was the best of our whole season, we were acting as a team but then we got gaps between the lines and you can't allow this against one of the best teams in Europe. They outplayed us.

"Then we made changes, we took risks and the players were wonderful. The attitude was great, a strong belief to win this game.

"Rashford is resilient, he keeps going, normally he finishes those moments but he kept going for another chance. That inspired the other players.

"We have a team that is for the future. Coming up are players who are developing very well like Diallo, Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo."

  9. 'A big moment for me'

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    Amad Dialo

Manchester United goalscorer Amad Diallo to ITV: "What a game! Today we deserved this win, we played very good, it was one of the best games of the season. It's the best goal of my life it's a really important moment.

"You need to believe in every single moment, this is football. When Garnacho gave me the ball I wanted to give it him back but it was a good moment to shoot. I am disappointed to be sent off but what is important is to win. To beat Liverpool is a big, big moment for me."

  10. 'The boys gave everything'

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Super intense. United had a really good start in the game, we didn't. We used the time and adapted well. We were outstanding but we had to finish the game off and we didn't. If you're only one goal up it's clear you're opponent is there. We lose it in the end. I cannot ask for me.

"The boys gave everything. Our decision making was not great. You have to accept the result. They deserve to go to the next round. It was a period in the second half when we should have finished it but we didn't and we know they could come back.

"I think my boys showed incredible character again. Super effort again. Everybody showed it. You cannot compare our season to United's with the amount of games. It's fine, we deal with it.

Now, the boys go on international duty. We hope they come back healthy. Lucho [Luis Diaz] felt his groin, Darwin [Nunez] hamstring. Cody [Gakpo] twisted his ankle. They play again in four or five days, it's crazy. Hopefully we will finish the season in style.

"I really feel for our people. In a few weeks we come again and we give it another try.

"How could I doubt the character of my boys? I don't. We use the situation and it's game over. We didn't use it and they ran through. I'm still proud of what I saw today. They boys have to recover and we will go for everything after the international break."

  11. 'It was a mad game'

    FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool

    Roy Keane

Former Manchester United midfielder on ITV

It was mad, it was a mad game. We could be here analysing it all night. Klopp is a good manager, he'll get these players back on track after the international break.

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)

    Manchester United

Manchester United match winner Amad Diallo, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Dream come true. That goal will give me a lot of confidence and I want to continue like this. I'm very happy. The most important thing is to win this game.

"I wanted to give it back to Garnacho but I see the defender and I have to go on my own. It is unbelievable, it is a dream for me to score the last goal for Manchester United. I want to say thanks to the supporters. It is one of the best games of the season so we want to continue like this."

  14. 'A massive feel-good factor'

FT: Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool (after extra time)
