Don Damon Funeral Held on Wednesday

CUNNINGHAM - Funeral services were held Wednesday for one of Cunningham's well known citizens, Donald Damon, a pioneer wheat farmer, who was one of the main leaders in the development of the Columbia Basin project.

Dr. Alfred Carter officiated at the services held at the Smith Funeral home in Spokane. Interment followed at Riverside Memorial Park.

Damon, 60, died at the Kadlec Methodist hospital in Richland July 20. Mueller Funeral home at Kennewick had charge of the local arrangements.

Donald Damon was born December 19, 1907, at Cunningham. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Damon.

Damon was instrumental in the development of the Columbia Basin. He was one of the founders of the Columbia Basin Land owners association which was organized in the early 1930's. The group was organized to determine the financial and agriculture needs of the people who would be affected by the irrigation waters of the Columbia river after the construction of Grand Coulee dam. He was an original board member of the East Columbia Irrigation Bureau, was president of the board of commissioners of the Bureau of Reclamation Commissions for several years, and a commissioner on the Board of Commissions for over 25 years until he resigned about three years ago after suffering a stroke.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Damon at the home; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Ross Brown of Cunningham; two grandchildren, Keith and Heather Brown of Cunningham; five sisters, Mrs. Bert (Freda) Smith of Kennewick; Mrs. Marian Berland of Edmonds; Mrs. Lee (Agnes) Brickey of
Burbank Heights, Pasco; Mrs. Art (Helen) Meilke of Lind; and Mrs. Melvin (Pat) Butterfield of Spokane; two brothers, Jack Damon of Lind and Mike Damon of Othello, and several nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers were John Damon, Royce Schuler, Tom Brickey, Peter Meilke, Colin MacKinnon and Don Adkins, Jr.

(Note: obit of his father indicates that Donald had died before he did. Donald is referenced in the Obit of his mother. Julia Kelly Damon )
