Improvement and Change are very much needed.

This is a very Negative place to be employed at and it's due to bad management .. "A bad manager can take a good staff and destroy it, causing the best employees to flee and the remainder to lose all motivation."

Pros

Great benifets

Cons

Poor management

Productive work place

Productive work place and a great place to grow you can also obtain skill and other job requirements for other jobs if needed forklifts box trucks 18 wheelers scanning etc

cold work environment

hiring practice is questionable, not based on merit, ethics or seniority, but based on nepotism. Experience, work ethics, commitment, and loyalty are qualities irrelevant to some warehouse supervisors

Pros

pay rate

Cons

cold temperature

Great

A typical day at work is normally a breeze and easy to deal with, there wasn't a hard part of the job the only thing was hard to deal with was being in the cold 24/7.

Pros

Alot of over time

Cons

Seasonal

Good place to work for security but no advancement.

Good place to work with good people; but, salaries are tied to the State of Delaware when it comes to annual increases. Education level or performance doesn't impact salaries, and of course there are no bonuses. If looking to work at the Port, one must negotiate a salary that will have to last until they retire or move on. The biggest perk employees have, for now, is all health insurance coverage is paid for. After 15-years, my career has become stagnant. The Port puts on a very nice golf tournament for its customers each year.

Pros

Healthcare 100% paid, free parking

Cons

Culture, middle management ignored

Challenges And Rewards

No two days are the same in our dynamic environment with a lot of challenges. There is a tremendous sense of accomplishment when difficult tasks are successfully completed.

Great method for volunteer work

A day of this kind of volunteerism consisted of the simple evaluation and organization of gate and day passes. These are the tasks that I had to do on the days in which I was assigned them. I learned to micromanage hundreds of papers simultaneously. Management does not apply and I had no co-workers. The hardest parts of the job were the length of the work and meticulous checking and counting of the passes and documents. The most enjoyable part was the simplicity of the actual work.

Pros

simplicity, many volunteer hours, worked at home

Cons

long periods of work, perfection in counting and evaluations

Temporary winter job with high pay and security experience

At this job, I worked as a security guard at specific stations each day. I learned to use standard Port of Wilmington equipment for casuals, such as scanners, radios. I also learned to properly monitor and oversee activities over relatively broad-sized areas. The management and communication aspects were good. Management gave me a wide variety of duties for each day on the job and provided good training prior to and during the work period. My co-workers were generally friendly to me and helped to facilitate my individual operations during employment. The most difficult part of the job was learning about what to do at new positions at which I worked. The most enjoyable aspect of the job was the fact that the duties are simple and easy to fulfill. I also enjoyed working publicly; this is something I do not get to do very often and I had to briefly speak to and check the TWIC cards of people who passed through my locations subsequently.

Pros

high pay, friendly and helpful co-workers, decent management, productive learning experience

Cons

no breaks at most security posts, heavy traffic, different restrictions at each post
