Squire Daymon (Damon) was born 1808 in Tennessee and immigrated to Texas to obtain some property he could own and farm. He applied for a single man's land grant at Gonzales colony, a land grant and received it. These settlers were happy to be part of a colony and able to farm their land.

When the Mexican government imposed restrictions on settlers, Squire Daymon enlisted in the Gonzales Rangers, intending to defend the colony he had settled in. Later this would also serve the Texas army. When the Mexican troops came for the Cannon belonging to Gonzales, Squire was serving with Coleman on September 28, defending their decision not to surrender the cannon at the Battle of Gonzales. [1]

Daymon then served at the Siege of Bexar, October - December, 1835.[2] In 1836, Squire Damon was assigned to the artillery company commanded by Capt.William R Carey. [3] After this he was garrisoned in the Alamo garrison as the artillery man. [4]

There was a lull in February, so by Feb 2, 1836 Daymon had left Bexar for home in Gonzales, perhaps to do spring planting for crops.. When Travis sent his "Appeal for help letter", on Feb 23, Daymon returned to the Alamo to help with defense with the Gonzales Mounted Rangers, "the Immortal 32" and entered the Alamo again March 1, 1836 with the Immortal 32. [5]

Squire Daymon was killed in the March 6, 1836 in the Battle of the Alamo. A memorial is in San Fernando Cathedral.[6]

Note: Heirs of PVT Squire Damon were awarded after certification of his service by Col. Neill, a first class bounty in Caldwell County, Texas 1 league of land. See GLO search: http://www.glo.texas.gov/history/archives/land-grants/index.cfm
