Quaint I believe is the word. Little joint but neat, read up on the buildings history which helped. Small but homey..lots of plush carpet covering uneven/old floors. Dark hardwood doors and trim, old style roll up blinds. Antique paint scheme, high ceilings this place makes you think old deadwood history. Rooms are small but still have everything, bed, chair, table, tv bath etc. clean and comfortable although my lady saw shadows and heard noises so maybe it's haunted??? Nice little spot to get out of the chain hotels but it's basic no breakfast or real modern amenities.

Prime location! Really nice front desk staff! Ok price! Jell-o shooters at the bar downstairs! Complimentary drinks while gambling! Will definitely choose this hotel next time I'm in Deadwood.
Rooms are a little dated, but that's more my style anyways.

We stayed here on July 8th on our way to Yellowstone. I was really looking forward to being in Deadwood bc it was one of my dad's favorite places to visit. This hotel is an old school casino and hotel which I liked.
After a pleasant check in we quickly dropped off our stuff in the room which had some charm and character and then went to explore the city.
When we came back the casino was pretty empty so we headed to our room. I pulled back the covers and laid down and quickly realized that the sheets were pretty damp. My guy went down to tell the front desk person (there was no phone in the room for us to call.) The front desk man came up right away to give us new sheets and bedding. It was pretty awkward and he seemed to downplay the situation. At one point when we pointed out that the mattress was also damp he said, "Well I'll let you guys figure out what to do." It was 11:00 pm. What could we have done? He told us there were no other rooms to switch to. So he laid a towel on the mattress and put the sheets over top which seemed kind of weird to me. My guy asked if we could get some sort of compensation, especially considering the higher cost of the room(we booked it for $112 which is pricey for us, two teachers.) He didn't seem to know what to do, but said he'd get us a drink downstairs which we declined since we were already ready for bed. When we commented that we should get some kind of refund he made a comment that The Iron Horse was actually pretty inexpensive for town - kind of implying "you get what you pay for." I think no matter what you pay you should get clean, dry sheets! He suggested talking to the front desk person in the morning.
In the morning the toilet clogged.
We headed downstairs to check out. We stood around for about ten minutes before anyone showed up at the front desk. The lady working was very kind and apologetic for our problems. She immediately called the manager and told us we would get half of our money mailed back to us. Today (over a week later) I did get a refund of $55.

I'm sad to write a bad review of this place because I think it has great potential to be a gem. We definitely would not stay here again though.

Booked a motel in "Sturgis" on line. Well, the motel is not in Sturgis, a few miles west in Whitewood. That being said, well worth the drive. Room was clean and well maintained. These are compact, no frills rooms. No desk, chairs, or bathtub. Affordable too, less than $90 a night on 4th of July weekend.

The historic building is pretty cool but the rooms are outdated, no basic amenities like fridge or coffee maker. After check in we went to check out the town and eat dinner (we didn't check out our room first). When we came back from a long day of traveling we got to our room and it was freezing (thermostat was at 55 degrees). It was really dark in there with only a small lamp. I used the bathroom only to find out there was no toilet paper anywhere to be found. So we went down stairs to ask to be switched to another room and the ladies at the front desk seemed annoyed when we voiced our concerns. When we mentioned how dark it was one of them asked "did you open the curtains?" It was night time so I'm not sure how that would've helped. They were nice enough to give us a different room but when we got in there the lady asked "is that enough toilet paper?" In the most sarcastic, condescending tone. Needless to say, we went and stayed somewhere else. The place has potential, but the staff totally ruined it. What a shame.

while on our motorcycle trip from indiana to wyoming, my boyfriend and i stayed at the Iron Horse in deadwood, south dakota.

we just kind of stumbled into it as we aren't planners...we didn't know where we were going to be one night to the next. The lady that helped us was wonderful...she initially set us up for a queen room for two nights but after we paid for it, she realized the room she gave us for the second night was already booked. She then switched us to an upgraded room for the same price (which was nice).

the room was cool...kind of old with actual keys instead of cards. don't try to keep the keys, though...it'll cost ya $25!

the older casinos in deadwood stink like cigarette smoke...one of the downsides. our room didn't stink, though, so we just had to deal with it when walking through.

we did have a bad experience the night night before we left. the owner was power-washing the parking lot and blew a bunch of sh*t (like rocks and dirt) all over the bike. ugh. not good. the next morning, when we were checking out, he apologized profusely, giving us some money back as well as a free breakfast (which was awesome). good business.

overall, the stay was nice as was the staff.

We are on the motocycle trip from wy to south dakota on Labor Day, and there are no room available in 140 mile radius. Luckily we found this Hotel and got one of the 4 last room here. The room is old, no bathtub, the bed is hard. We paid $78 before tax, it is a good price in this sittuation. We dont care about the room condition, just need a cheap place to stay a night.
