*Co. F, AR Inf; Civil War at Fayetteville, AR; Battle of Wilson Creek. He saw service in 2 wars and was instrumental in the state of AR returning to the Union at the close of the Civil War. John volunteered for service in the US Army for service against an Indian luprising while still a boy and was discharge in 1838 after serving 3 years in Simpson's Co., 1st TN Inf, in the Seminole War. Later that same year, he came with his father and mother to what is now Christian Co., MO, and helped clear the land and build a log house on land his father homesteaded on Bull Creek. The McCoys made the trek from TN by ox cart, bing more than 6 wks enroute.
After his marriage to Elizabeth, they moved to Newton Co., AR and lilved on Big Creek. John served as at state rep. in 1858 for Newton Co., and State Senator in 1864 for Carroll and Newton Cos. He was a vigorous opponent of the secession ordinance, voting aganst the act under open threats that he would be shot down on the floor of the leg. He organized a volunteer Union Infantry Co. "F" at Fayetteville, AR in 1863, and was commissioned a captain. He led his men in many AR engagments. Following the war, he returned to MO, settling on Bull Creek, abt 10 miles south of Ozark. Almost unaided, he built a grist mill, every part of it make of wood. He also opened a blacksmith shop and made linchpin wagons and shaped tools for his neighbors.
