Care Tips for your Swiss Army Knives

Sharpening

To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur.

Cleaning

After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.

The Cadet is one of my favorite Victorinox knives because it's small and light enough to be barely noticeable in my pocket, and yet it's big and sturdy enough for what I consider "serious" tasks, far beyond the capabilities of the tiny Classic SD. With the slim, elegant but rugged styling of the alox scales, it can be both a gentleman's knife and a utility workhorse. As such, it is my "go-to" knife whenever I need to carry something reliable and robust, but also unobtrusive and urbanite-friendly.The knife blade is sharp, and has very good cutting and slicing performance thanks to the full flat grind and the high polish finish. It maintains reasonable cutting ability even after the edge is no longer razor sharp. The blade is also just the right size for opening wine bottles with some clever thinking. The bottle opener with the large driver is sturdy enough for light duty prying tasks. The small driver with the can opener can also drive Phillips screws. The nail file is useful for rounding off finger nail edges and removing dirt from under them. The overall finish and build quality of the tool is impeccable, and puts some more expensive knives to shame. With a little mod, you can turn the Cadet into a shrunken-down version of the classic Soldier knife. Use a sharpening stone to put a chisel edge onto one side of the nail file, near the tip. It becomes another sharp pointy tool that can be used to drill holes or scrape a ferro rod, just as you would with an awl, while retaining all the functionality of a nail file.Overall, I find this knife offers a practical assortment of tools for a typical day in the city or a weekend getaway. For the times when additional tools like scissors, tweezers, or pen come in handy, I also carry a SwissCard Lite. This combination has worked well in my daily use for over a year now.

I bought this to be a transparent keychain tool (mainly for the knife and bottle opener). It is very slim, feels nice to hold, and is not cumbersome in the pocket. I might note that it is a little larger than it could be... I don't see the need for a blade of this length in a non-locking pocket multi-tool. Of course, you could just read the specs and decide if it is the right length for you. There is the benefit to having the handle be long enough to get a 5-finger grip on the thing, but again, for a non-locking blade, I don't see this as necessary.

The finish on the tools is very nice, and it all feels well put together. The textured aluminum handle is great, and should last ages. The can opener works well enough.

The biggest problem I have with this is that the bottle opener, which I use very often, is terrible. Just terrible. The reason being is that the "lip" which hooks into the bottom of the bottle cap is much too small. As a result, it constantly slips, and requires on average 3 attempts to get a cap off. The fix would simply be to make the lip a little longer and curved more, such as the one on the Gerber artifact.
I feel little embarrassed every time I try to open a bottle of beer at social events with this thing, and slip a few time.

The other problem is that the nail file is useless and takes up space. I'd much rather have scissors, riveting tool, or a small serrated blade.

I would recommend passing on this if you need to use the bottle opener. The five star rating sort of surprises me since these are obvious flaws.

This is a really great knife. I keep one in the car, one at work, and I just bought another one for backpacking and general use. They are dirt cheap given the quality components. The aluminum housing is lightweight and virtually indestructible. The big knife blade is very sharp and holds an edge well. I don't really use the nail file. The can opener is very useful; it features a small flathead screwdriver that doubles as a phillips head. It also has a can opener with a larger flathead screwdriver on the end.

I was attracted to the Cadet because of its slim width, which blew me away. Given its slightly smaller overall size compared to standard SAKs, the knife offers surprising versatility. Victorinox counts 9 functions on the Cadet, but that includes the key ring. I discount the key ring as a tool--it's more of an amenity--and count the small flat-head screwdriver on the can opener as two functions--flat-head plus standard phillips screws. And the nail cleaner on the end of the nail file turns small phillips screws. As a result I count ten functions. It's difficult to find that much versatility in such a compact, attractive package that's so easy to carry. I have three other SAKs ranging from the Classic to the Ranger. When I head outdoors I grab the more versatile Ranger, but it's a tad bulky for EDC, and the tools of any SAK can't help if you don't have the knife with you. I've had the Cadet only a short time, but have already used it on several occasions for projects that otherwise would have required a trip to retrieve one of my other SAKs or a tool from my work bench. Example: I noticed a loose screw on the lid of a sauce pan: bingo, the Cadet was in the watch pocket of my jeans. Job completed in the time it takes to read these two sentences. IMHO one can't go wrong with the Victorinox Cadet, and if a toothpick, tweezers, or scissors are desirable, add a Classic to a back pocket, backpack, or purse. There ya go. . . .

I work in a professional environment were I often have to empty my pockets. This sturdy little knife goes virtually unnoticed by staff. I have left the keyring on to give it an even more harmless look. It is finely crafted but not so elegant or unique as to trigger the 'pick it up' reflex in others. When using the screwdrivers the turning action is very well balanced - for a knife it is a pretty good screwdriver! The nail file has come in handy several times already when I've gotten a chip at work. Plus, I can clean and file while diagnostics are running - gives me something to do. It is a study knife of high quality and perfect size; the blade is only 1/4 inch shorter than the standard Swiss pocket knife. A great EDC knife, highly recommended.
