CI rimfire ammunition and my testing at distance

Shooting range Plant Air gun Tree Match rifle shooting

Cascade Cartridge International is an older Mexican brand of 22LR ammunition. I first ran into this type of ammunition about 4 months ago when looking for some type of 22LR for the upcoming DPRC Precision Rimfire match shot on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

In my research of finding the ammunition info I ran across limited data, in this PDF they are quoted as saying
" Sometime in the 1970s the CCI brand was dropped and replaced with the CI brand or trademark. This trademark was still in use as of 1986. Exact dates of production are not known at this time.
Then I found more info on the CI brand 22lr, but its all open on the net, you can find it too. What I could find was its a old 1950's FN ammo plant, that makes a lot of different types of rimfire ammunition and is rebranded for well known ammunition brands sold in the US.

My bottom line is, I needed some 22lr so my family and I can go shoot in these matches and practice some. I was able to get 150rnds of the green box and 150rnds of the blue box from Scott McClure at CPF-Arms in Rocky Mount when I went to pick up my G19gen4 from him.

I used 4 types of ammunition for testing. Eley Edge, CCI Tactical, CI Blue box and CI green box.

The rifle I used is my CZ452 LUX with a Leupold 4.5-14x42mm Vari-III Tactical.

This gun has been shot many a time out past 200yds and I felt that a 25yd, 50yd 100yd and a 200yd test was a fair way to see how this ammunition will work for my use in the DPRC Precision rifle match.

Now with all that, below is a chart in MOA of the target sizes the DPRC Precision Rimfire match shot on the 3rd Sunday of each month uses at distances.

Now I have an idea of how tight my rifle needs to shoot, 1.5 MOA; the extreme outer edge of precision I need is 3.0 MOA. At 3.0 MOA I will be within all target sizes and a 50% cone of fire on the hard target at 90yds. So now my accuracy goal is set. Lets see how the CI ammunition stacks up.

How the testing was performed.

At DPRC rifle range I setup first the 100yd then the 200yd target. I shot each target with a stacked magazine. So I shot target 1 with Eley, target 2 with CCI Tactical, target 3 with CI Blue box and target 4 with CI green box. I repeated the same process at the 25 and 50yd distances.

I loaded the magizines in this order, CI green box last, Eley first. This allowed each target ot be shot in the same wind calls and so if the wind blew one type of ammo I shot so quickly it affected each type ammunition equality.

First groups shot 100yds:

Second groups 200yds:

Third Groups Shot 25yds:

Last groups fired 50yds:

I must say by the 50yd targets I was getting warn out. So keep that in mind that I shot 100, 200, 25 then 50yds.

So my bottom line, the ammo shoots, the MOA is within the target size I need. Is it as good as Eley? Nope nor will it ever be. But I can buy it, use it and my family can enjoy the shooting sports. That to me is worth any cost to see my little one enjoy shooting and my wife agreeing to me buying more shooting gear :) for the kid ;) ;)

John,
I'm interested in your test but confused by my own ignorance.

At the outset, you said that you needed a 3.0 MOA level of accuracy. Then in your photos with the statistical information, I see "MAX:" with various figures and "ATC:" with various figures, but it isn't obvious to me what "MAX" or "ATC" means. Also, the figures aren't alll less than 3.0 and sometimes the CI ammo has better figures than the Eley, so I'm struggling to understand your conclusions.

Would you mind explaining it just a little further so I can connect the dots? Thanks in advance.

John,
I think you got the information that you wanted.
But, it looks like the data that is shown on each target is in error. I think the targets are 1" squares. Is that the case? If so then the data shown is incorrect. I only ask this because I decided to test some of the different ammo I have to see how it might compare. I know different guns and shooters, but just trying to get an idea. I was just looking at the max spread. I only tested at 50 yards. And wanted to relate what I had versus yours.
If you can let me know your spreads at 50 yards, I would appreciate it.
As always you do a great job on your testing and write-ups.

.22lr ammo !! Just goes to show what different brands of ammo does in one rifle. Something looks to amuck with your read outs for group size too. If no wind to deal with you need to try a few more labels as nothing there is a stands out as that good, low cost or higher cost ammo .

Just did a little testing today with some CI Blue. vs my CCI mini mags (which shoot the best in my rifle.)
Only able to do at 50 yards today.
10 shot groups.
CI blue 1.4"
CCI Mini mag 1.5"
I am happy with this ammo. Will be trying to shoot longer in the next few week.
